OAKLAND CITY, Ind. – The IU Southeast baseball team used a seven-run fifth inning to rally and defeat Oakland City 11-4 on Friday to extend its winning streak to 11 games.
The Grenadiers struck first when
Luke Powell and
Mason White scored on a throwing error.
The Mighty Oaks took the lead back with a four-run fourth inning that was capped off by a three-run home run by Oliver Hamilton.
The lead was short-lived as the Grenadier offense took the game over in the fifth inning.
A leadoff single by
Colin Long followed by a bunt base hit by
Slater Schield put a runner in scoring position.
Mason White followed with a RBI single to score Long.
Consecutive walks tied the game and a RBI single by
Ethan Burdette put the Grenadiers in front.
A bases-loaded walk by
Max Flock scored Powell and Long capped the rally with a bases-clearing double to extend the lead to 9-4.
In the seventh, Burdette walked and stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch.
In the eighth, Schield singled and later scored on RBI single by
Luke Powell.
Starter
Luke Schafer got the complete-game win. He allowed four runs on five hits, struck out nine and walked a batter.
Colin Long was 3-for-5 with a run scored and three RBI in the win.
Slater Schield,
Luke Powell and
Ethan Burdette each had two hits and Burdette drove in a pair.
The series concludes Saturday at 1 p.m. ET with a doubleheader.
