HATTIESBURG, Miss. – An RBI double by
Kendall Brown and a complete game shutout by
Madison Wathen propelled IU Southeast to a 1-0 victory over Reinhardt in the NAIA Softball Opening Round.
IU Southeast had a runner on second base in the top of the first after a two-out double by
Autumn Oehlstrom, but a popup got Reinhardt out of the inning.
The Grenadiers had runners on first and second with one out in the second, but Reinhardt once again escaped the jam to keep the game scoreless.
Reinhardt used a leadoff single and a stolen base to put a runner on second with no outs in the third, but
Madison Wathen retired three straight batters to send the game into the fourth tied at 0-0.
Erin Templeman led off the top of the fourth with a single. A sacrifice bunt by
Macie Zink advanced pinch runner
Alaina Winzeler to second.
Kendall Brown followed with an RBI double to put IU Southeast ahead 1-0.
IU Southeast and Reinhardt both had a runner in scoring position in the fifth, but both teams were unable to score as the Grenadiers took a 1-0 lead into the sixth.
The Grenadiers loaded the bases in the top of the sixth, but a lineout to center allowed Reinhardt to escape the jam once more.
IU Southeast would go on to secure a 1-0 win after Reinhardt went three up, three down in the seventh.
Madison Wathen threw a complete game shutout in the win, allowing just one single while striking out eight.
Kendall Brown led IU Southeast with three hits and drove in the only run of the game.
IU Southeast (35-17) will play Stillman in an elimination game beginning at 3:00 EST on Wednesday.
