LEWISTON, Idaho – The IU Southeast baseball team defeated William Carey 6-5 on the first day of the 2024 Avista NAIA World Series.
IU Southeast kicked off the scoring in the top of the first when
Mason White hit a solo home run off the right field scoreboard to give the Grenadiers a 1-0 lead.
After three straight walks,
Max Flock used a sacrifice fly to give IU Southeast a 2-0 lead. After a hit by pitch,
Brayden Hazelwood drew a bases loaded walk to put IU Southeast ahead 3-0 in the opening frame.
Trevor Goodwin hit a solo home run to lead off the top of the third to give IU Southeast a 4-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth,
Mason White hit his second home run of the game to put IU Southeast ahead 5-0.
A two-run home run by William Carey's Bailee Hendon in the bottom of the fourth cut the IU Southeast lead to 5-2.
IU Southeast loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the sixth. A wild pitch allowed
Slater Schield to score to give IU Southeast a 6-2 lead.
William Carey loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth with no outs. Two groundouts and a balk allowed William Carey to score three runs to cut the IU Southeast lead to 6-5.
William Carey put two on with two outs in the seventh, but
Kacey Cheek got IU Southeast out of the jam with a strikeout.
IU Southeast turned to closer
Garrett Hill in the ninth, and the senior used a popup, a strikeout, and a flyout to secure the 6-5 win for the Grenadiers.
Mason White led IU Southeast with three hits, including two home runs.
Trevor Goodwin also homered in the win.
Luke Schafer got the win after throwing six innings, allowing five runs on five hits while striking out eight.
Kacey Cheek threw two scoreless innings, and
Garrett Hill picked up the save with a scoreless ninth.
IU Southeast (37-18) faces 2 seed Georgia Gwinnett at 9:35 PM EST on Saturday.
