LEWISTON, Idaho – The IU Southeast baseball team fell to Georgia Gwinnett 5-2 on day two of the 2024 Avista NAIA World Series.
Both teams had their leadoff hitters reach in the first inning, but neither team was able to drive in a run as the game remained scoreless after one.
IU Southeast had runners on first and second with one out in the fourth, but a flyout and a groundout got Georgia Gwinnett out of the jam.
With runners on the corners and one out in the fourth, Georgia Gwinnett scored a run on a squeeze bunt attempt when the throw home was knocked out of the glove of the catcher. An RBI groundout and an RBI single gave Georgia Gwinnett a 3-0 lead.
A double, a hit by pitch, and an RBI single gave Georgia Gwinnett a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth.
IU Southeast used a single and a walk to put runners on first and second in the sixth, but the Grenadiers were unable to drive in a run as Georgia Gwinnett maintained a 4-0 lead.
Max Flock led off the top of the seventh with a single and came around to score on a
Logan Murphy double to cut the lead to 4-1. Pinch runner
Alex Yurt came around to score on a fielder's choice by
Slater Schield to make it 4-2.
An RBI single in the bottom of the seventh extended the Georgia Gwinnett lead to 5-2, which would go on to be the final score.
Logan Murphy had two of the four hits for the Grenadiers, including a double.
Connor Sims allowed two earned runs in five innings of work while striking out seven.
Conner Fries threw a scoreless inning in relief.
Cade Reynolds allowed one run in two innings while striking out four.
IU Southeast (37-19) faces Hope International in an elimination game on Monday at 2:35 PM EST.
