NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast volleyball team kicked off their season on Saturday, falling to Marian 3-1 in what also served as the team's regular season home opener.
IU Southeast jumped out to an early 8-4 lead before Marian rattled off three straight points to cut the lead to 8-7. A 4-1 run featuring three kills by
Ella Brooks gave IU Southeast a 12-8 edge.
Another 4-1 run gave IU Southeast a 16-10 lead. Four straight points by Marian made it 16-14 but kills by
Ella Brooks and
Jordan Vaughan made it 18-14 Grenadiers. Marian was able to cut the first set lead to two, but IU Southeast would pull away late to take the first set 25-20.
Set two saw Marian jump out to an 11-6 lead. IU Southeast trailed 13-9, but four straight points allowed the Grenadiers to tie the second set up at 13-13.
Marian went on a quick 3-0 run, but IU Southeast answered with a 4-0 run to take a 17-16 lead. The teams traded points back and forth, but an ace by Marian gave the Knights a 21-20 edge. IU Southeast answered with a kill and an ace by
Haley Jaster to swing the lead back in their favor at 22-21, but Marian used a 4-0 run to take the second set 25-22 and tie the match at 1-1.
IU Southeast began set three with a 10-4 run to take an early lead. Marian would respond with a 7-1 run to tie things up at 11-11. After an attack error gave IU Southeast a 14-13 lead, an 8-0 run by Marian shifted the momentum back in their favor as the Knights took a 21-14 lead. Marian would go on to take the third set 25-17.
Marian used a trio of 3-0 runs to take a 12-8 lead in the fourth set. After two straight points by IU Southeast, Marian used a 7-1 run to take a 19-11 lead. IU Southeast never got within six after that point as Marian took the fourth set 25-17 and the match 3-1.
For IU Southeast,
Ella Brooks led with 14 kills, followed by
Jessi Kramer and
Allison Daves with six kills apiece.
Carly Mason had 22 assists, and
Kacy Hornish added 11. Four Grenadiers had double-digit digs, led by
Ella Davidson with 15.
Reagan Ealy had 14,
Jessi Kramer had 12 and
Carly Mason had 11.
IU Southeast returns to action on Friday, Aug. 23 for matches against IU Northwest and Bethel University (Ind.) in the Onset Invitational in Fort Wayne, Ind.
