FORT WAYNE, Ind. – IU Southeast fell to IU Northwest in five sets and Bethel in three sets on Friday at the Onset Invitational.
IU Northwest kicked off the first set with an 8-4 run, forcing an IU Southeast timeout. After IU Southeast cut the lead back to three at 12-9, IU Northwest used a 5-1 run to take a 17-10 lead. IU Northwest closed on a 6-1 run to take the first set 25-14.
IU Southeast opened the second set on a 4-0 run. An ace by
Kacy Hornish later in the set gave the Grenadiers a 10-5 edge.
After IU Northwest cut the Grenadier lead to 11-7, IU Southeast rattled off six straight points to take a 17-7 lead. IU Southeast would go on to win the second set 25-12.
IU Southeast once against took a 4-0 lead to begin the third set. Back-to-back aces later in the set by
Kacy Hornish gave IU Southeast a 10-3 lead. Trailing 11-4, IU Northwest went on a 5-1 run to cut the Grenadier lead to three at 12-9.
A 4-0 run featuring three kills by
Jessi Kramer gave IU Southeast a 16-9 edge. Back-to-back kills by
Ella Brooks later in the set made it 20-13 Grenadiers, but a 4-1 IU Northwest run made it 21-17.
Two straight kills from
Kali Bowie made it 23-17 Grenadiers, and IU Southeast would go on to take the third set 25-21.
The teams were tied at 7-7 early in the fourth set. IU Northwest scored four straight points to take a 11-7 lead. Leading 14-10, nine straight points by IU Northwest made it 23-10. IU Northwest took the fourth set 25-14.
The two teams were tied at 4-4 to open the fifth set. Back-to-back kills by
Jordan Vaughan and an attack error gave IU Southeast a 7-4 lead. IU Northwest answered with a 3-0 run of their own to tie the set at 7-7.
IU Southeast was able to take a 10-8 lead, but another 3-0 run gave IU Northwest an 11-10 lead. IU Southeast tied the set at 11, but a 4-0 run by IU Northwest gave the RedHawks a 15-11 set victory and a 3-2 match win.
Jessi Kramer and
Ella Brooks led IU Southeast with 11 kills.
Carly Mason led the Grenadiers with 23 assists, and
Kacy Hornish added 16.
Reagan Ealy led IU Southeast with 16 digs.
Ella Brooks had 14 digs, and
Ella Davidson added 13.
Kacy Hornish had four aces.
In IU Southeast's second match of the day, Bethel jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first set. Bethel used a 10-2 run to take a 17-6 lead and would go on to win the first set 25-12.
Bethel led 6-2 early in the second set, but IU Southeast would come back to tie the set at 7-7. The Pilots took a 14-10 lead, but the Grenadiers used a 4-1 run to cut the Bethel lead to 15-14.
Bethel answered with a 4-1 run to extend their lead to four at 19-15. The Pilots would go on to win the second set 25-22.
With the teams tied 6-6 in the third set, Bethel used a 6-1 run to take a 12-7 lead. Another 6-1 run later in the set gave the Pilots an 18-11 edge.
IU Southeast answered with a 7-0 run of their own to tie the set at 18-18. IU Southeast used a 3-1 run to take a 21-19 lead. Trailing 22-20, Bethel scored three straight points to swing the lead back in their favor at 23-22.
Two straight points by IU Southeast made it 24-23 Grenadiers, but a 3-0 run by Bethel gave the Pilots a 26-24 set victory and a 3-0 match win.
Ella Brooks led IU Southeast with eight kills.
Carly Mason had 17 assists, and
Kacy Hornish had 13.
Reagan Ealy led IU Southeast with nine digs, and
Esther Woodward had five.
Reagan Ealy,
Kali Bowie, and
Alanna Wray had two aces apiece.
IU Southeast returns to action on Saturday against Saint Francis and Taylor at 1:15 PM and 5:30 PM, respectively.
