NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast volleyball team defeated Shawnee State in four sets (25-23, 31-33, 25-20, 25-21) in a conference match on Saturday.
IU Southeast used a 4-0 run early in the first set to take an 8-5 lead. Shawnee State cut the lead to one at 11-10, and the teams traded points until the Grenadiers used a 5-1 run to take a 19-14 lead.
Trailing 21-15, Shawnee State used an 8-1 run to take a 23-22 lead. IU Southeast answered with a 3-0 run to take the first set 25-23.
IU Southeast opened the second set with a 10-2 run. Shawnee State responded with a 6-1 run to cut the lead to 11-8. IU Southeast led 16-11, but a 5-0 Bears run tied the set at 16-16. Three straight IU Southeast points made it 19-16, but Shawnee State came back to tie the set at 21-21.
Shawnee State took a 24-22 edge, but IU Southeast scored three straight points to take a 25-24 lead. The teams continued to trade points until Shawnee State scored three points in a row to take the second set 33-31.
The third set saw Shawnee State lead 9-6 early. IU Southeast fought back to take a 13-12 lead. After three straight points by the Bears, the Grenadiers used a 7-1 run to take a 20-16 lead. IU Southeast would go on to take the third set 25-20.
Shawnee State jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the fourth set. The Bears extended their lead to five at 13-8 before a 6-1 Grenadier run tied the set at 14-14.
Shawnee State took a 17-15 advantage, but a 5-1 IU Southeast run gave the Grenadiers the lead back at 20-18. The Bears cut the lead to one at 22-21, but IU Southeast would take the fourth set 25-21 and the match 3-1.
Ella Brooks led IU Southeast with 19 kills and added a trio of aces.
Jessi Kramer added 16 kills, and
Haley Jaster had 14.
Carly Mason led the Grenadiers with 30 assists and four aces.
Kacy Hornish added 24 assists.
Jessi Kramer had a team-high 23 digs, and
Ella Davidson added 20.
Madison Ramsey had a team-high 5.0 blocks, and both
Haley Jaster and
Kali Bowie added 4.0.
IU Southeast looks to continue their conference winning ways on the road against IU Kokomo on Thursday.
