FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IU Southeast volleyball team fell to Lourdes in five sets but responded with a five-set win over Olivet Nazarene on day one of the Liz Lykowski Memorial Tournament hosted by Indiana Tech.
In set one of match one, Lourdes jumped out to a 7-3 lead. After IU Southeast made it 7-6, Lourdes used an 8-1 run to take a 15-7 lead. Trailing 21-10, the Grenadiers cut the lead to 22-15 but it was Lourdes who took the first set 25-16.
The second set began evenly matched as the teams were tied 10-10. An 8-2 run by IU Southeast gave the Grenadiers an 18-12 lead. Lourdes slowly chipped away at the lead, cutting the deficit to two at 21-19, but IU Southeast scored three of the last four points to take the second set 25-20.
IU Southeast opened the third set with a 7-4 lead, but Lourdes went on a 4-0 run to take an 8-7 edge. After Lourdes took an 11-9 lead, IU Southeast scored five straight points to take a 14-11 advantage.
Trailing 16-13, a 4-0 run gave Lourdes a 17-16 advantage. A 5-1 IU Southeast run put the Grenadiers back ahead at 21-18. Lourdes cut the lead to one at 21-20, but three straight points gave the Grenadiers a 24-20 lead. Lourdes cut the lead to 24-23, but IU Southeast took the third set 25-23.
IU Southeast jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the fourth set. An 11-7 lead turned into an 11-10 edge as Lourdes rattled off a trio of points. Lourdes took their first lead of the set at 14-13.
The teams were knotted up at 19-19 before IU Southeast used two straight points to move ahead 21-19. IU Southeast took a 23-20 lead, but Lourdes scored the final five points of the set to take the fourth set 25-23.
IU Southeast took a 3-0 lead to open the fifth set, but Lourdes answered with a 4-0 run to take a 4-3 lead. With the teams tied at 5-5, another 4-0 run gave Lourdes a 9-5 lead. IU Southeast cut the lead to 10-8, but a 5-0 run gave Lourdes a 15-8 set win and a 3-2 match win.
Ella Brooks led IU Southeast with 14 kills.
Haley Jaster added 11 kills and 4.0 blocks.
Carly Mason led the Grenadiers with 24 assists and four aces.
Ella Davidson had 21 digs to lead the team.
Olivet Nazarene opened the first set of the match against IU Southeast on an 8-0 run. Trailing 10-1, IU Southeast used a 6-1 run to cut the lead to 11-7. IU Southeast came back to tie the set at 17-17 before a 5-0 run gave Olivet Nazarene a 22-17 lead. Olivet Nazarene would take the first set 25-19.
The teams were tied at 8-8 to open the second set. A 4-1 run by IU Southeast gave the Grenadiers a 12-9 lead. Olivet Nazarene came back to take a 16-14 lead, but a 6-0 IU Southeast run gave the Grenadiers a 20-16 edge.
Trailing 23-18, Olivet Nazarene went on a 5-0 run to tie the set at 23-23, but IU Southeast used back-to-back kills by
Ella Brooks to take the second set 25-23.
IU Southeast opened the third set with a 7-3 run. Leading 14-10, a 5-0 run by IU Southeast gave the Grenadiers a 19-10 edge. IU Southeast would go on to take the third set 25-18.
Back-to-back service aces by
Alanna Wray gave IU Southeast a 10-9 lead in the fourth set. A 6-0 run gave Olivet Nazarene a 15-10 advantage, but IU Southeast answered with a 7-1 run to take a 17-16 edge.
Back-to-back attack errors later in the set gave the Grenadiers a 21-20 lead, but a 4-0 run put Olivet Nazarene back in front at 24-21. Olivet Nazarene took the fourth set 25-22.
The fifth set saw IU Southeast use a 5-0 run to take a 7-4 lead. Olivet Nazarene responded with a trio of points to tie the set at 7-7. A 5-1 run by IU Southeast gave the Grenadiers a 12-8 lead.
Olivet Nazarene cut the lead to two twice at 12-10 and 14-12, but a kill by
Ella Brooks gave the Grenadiers a 15-12 set win and a 3-2 match win.
Ella Brooks led IU Southeast with 17 kills.
Haley Jaster had 12 kills, and
Jessi Kramer had 10.
Carly Mason led IU Southeast with 33 assists and 16 digs.
Brianna Bucher and
Alanna Wray each had a trio of aces, and
Carly Mason added two. The senior trio of
Jessi Kramer,
Haley Jaster, and
Kali Bowie each had 2.0 blocks.
IU Southeast returns to action on Saturday against Indiana Tech at 10:00 AM and IU Northwest at 12:00 PM for day two of the Liz Lykowski Memorial Tournament.
