IU Southeast Cruises to 106-35 Win Over IU Columbus

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast women's basketball team cruised to a 106-35 win over IU Columbus on Tuesday.
 
IU Southeast jumped out to an 8-3 lead, but a 5-0 run by IU Columbus tied the game at 8-8. A Karly Sweeney three gave the Grenadiers an 11-8 edge, but a Crimson Pride layup made it 11-10.
 
IU Southeast answered with a 6-0 run to take a 17-10 lead. A three by IU Columbus made it 17-13, but a 6-0 run by the Grenadiers made it 23-13. IU Columbus closed the first quarter on a 7-0 run to cut the Grenadier lead to three at 23-20.
 
A pair of IU Columbus free throws to open the second quarter cut the Crimson Pride deficit to one at 23-22. IU Southeast exploded from here on out, using a massive 26-0 run to blow the game open and take a 49-22 lead. The Grenadiers led 53-26 at the half.
 
IU Southeast outscored IU Columbus 27-6 in the third quarter and 26-3 in the fourth quarter to cruise to a 106-35 win.
 
"It's always nice winning a game in conference play," IU Southeast interim head coach Derek Sims said. "Every single person on our roster stepped up and contributed to this win. In a week where we play three games, it's important to start the week with a good performance. I feel we did that tonight."
 
Every Grenadier scored at least three points in the win, and five Grenadiers scored in double-figures. Ella Brown led IU Southeast with a career-high 21 points while adding seven rebounds and a pair of blocks. Jesse Ledgerwood had 13 points, and Makenna Wilson added 12. Linzie Wernert had 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
 
Grace Stapleton filled the stat sheet, recording a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists while adding five rebounds and five steals. Lexi Starr had nine points and six rebounds, Skyler Mills had eight points and four rebounds, and Karly Sweeney had seven points and six rebounds. Caity Dailey and Taylor Treat both had six points apiece, and Carley Higgins added three points and six rebounds.
 
IU Southeast shot 50.6 percent from the field, 40 percent from three (12-30), and 87.5 percent from the free throw line (14-16). The Grenadiers assisted on 28 of their 40 made field goals.
 
IU Southeast (7-7, 2-3 RSC) returns to action on Thursday at Miami-Middletown.
