IU Southeast Defeats Miami-Middletown 73-56 for Third Straight Win

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio. – The IU Southeast women's basketball defeated Miami-Middletown 73-56 on Tuesday to extend their winning streak to three games.
 
IU Southeast jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter, but Miami-Middletown fought back. The two teams were tied 13-13 after the first quarter.
 
IU Southeast used a big second quarter to take a double-digit lead. The Grenadiers outscored Miami-Middletown 23-11 in the second and led 36-24 at halftime.
 
The third quarter was evenly matched, as IU Southeast narrowly outscored Miami-Middletown 15-13. The Grenadiers led 51-37 after three quarters.
 
Miami-Middletown cut the Grenadier lead to nine in the second half, but IU Southeast had a counterpunch for every ThunderHawk basket. IU Southeast outscored Miami-Middletown 22-19 in the fourth quarter and would go on to win 73-56.
 
"Not really happy with our performance considering the last two games," IU Southeast interim head coach Derek Sims said. "I always talk about trending and how we always need to be trending up. You can be level, but you can't stay for long. Defensively we didn't trend up tonight. I'm okay with missing shots and staying level on offense. Defense always needs to be trending up."
 
IU Southeast was led by Linzie Wernert, who recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Jesse Ledgerwood added 10 points off the bench. Lexi Starr had nine points, a team-high seven assists, six rebounds, and a team-high four steals. Karly Sweeney added nine points, eight rebounds, and three steals. Makenna Wilson also added nine points. Taylor Treat added eight points and tied for the team lead with four steals. Grace Stapleton and Ella Brown each added seven points.
 
IU Southeast (8-7, 2-3 RSC) returns to action on Saturday for a home conference game against WVU Tech.
