NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast men's basketball team used a strong second half to get past WVU Tech 71-64 on Saturday.
WVU Tech started hot, jumping out to a 10-2 lead three minutes into the game. WVU Tech used back-to-back threes to extend their lead to 12 at 16-4.
WVU Tech used an 8-1 run to extend their advantage to 17 at 24-7. Trailing 28-11, five straight points by
Camden Pfeister cut the Grenadier deficit back to 12 at 28-16.
IU Southeast cut the Golden Bear lead to 10 at 31-21, but WVU Tech was able to jump back in front by 12 at 34-22. IU Southeast closed the half on a 6-0 run, but WVU Tech led 34-28 at the half.
The Grenadiers opened the second half with a 9-2 run to take their first lead at 37-36. A three by
Trent Hinkle gave IU Southeast a 40-36 lead.
A 9-0 run by WVU Tech put the Golden Bears back in front at 45-40. WVU Tech extended their lead back to eight at 52-44 with 10:13 remaining.
WVU Tech led 57-49 with 8:19 left, but a 9-0 run by IU Southeast put the Grenadiers back in front at 58-57 with 6:23 remaining.
With the score tied at 60-60 with 3:42 remaining, a three by
Xavier Price gave IU Southeast a 63-60 edge. Two free throws by
Eli Meyer and a free throw by
Camden Pfeister extended the Grenadier lead to 66-60.
WVU Tech used a layup to cut the Grenadier lead to four at 66-62, but
Trent Hinkle connected on a pair of free throws to extend the lead back to six at 68-62.
Trent Hinkle hit three more free throws down the stretch to secure a 71-64 win for IU Southeast.
"Don't know why we can't have a better start, but we finished really strong," IU Southeast head coach
Wiley Brown said. "I hope everyone saw how Cam can affect the game defensively. He has the defensive capability to be defensive player of the year in our conference. It was a great win for our team because WVT punched us in the mouth the first half, but we did the punching in the second half. Back to the lab!"
Trent Hinkle led IU Southeast with a career-high 21 points and four assists.
Lane Lauderbaugh had 14 points and tied for the team lead with six rebounds and four assists.
Camden Pfeister scored 13 points, tied for the team lead with six rebounds, and added a team-high five steals.
Eli Meyer had seven points and tied for the team lead with six rebounds.
Xavier Price also added seven points.
IU Southeast shot 43.1 percent from the floor and 50 percent from three (8-16). The Grenadiers went 19-22 from the free throw line. IU Southeast had 14 assists on 22 made field goals.
IU Southeast moves to 8-8 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
The Grenadiers return to action on Tuesday for a non-conference game at Simmons College.
