Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

IU Southeast Falls to No. 11 Rio Grande

RIO GRANDE, Ohio – The IU Southeast women's basketball team fell to No. 11 Rio Grande 85-67 on Thursday.

IU Southeast used a Linzie Wernert three for the first points of the game, but a 7-0 run by Rio Grande gave the RedStorm a 7-3 lead. Rio Grande extended their lead to eight at 13-5 and led 21-12 after the first quarter.

Rio Grande extended their lead to 12 at 28-16. The RedStorm led by as many as 22 in the second quarter and led 49-28 at the half.

IU Southeast outscored Rio Grande 22-19 in the third, but the RedStorm still maintained a 68-50 lead after three quarters.

IU Southeast cut the lead to 16 in the fourth quarter but could not get any closer as No. 11 Rio Grande secured an 85-67 win.

"I liked the way we fought tonight," IU Southeast interim head coach Derek Sims said. "You're not going to beat Rio or anyone really when you shoot 15% from three. What I'm not proud of is our mental breakdowns. Leaving shooters for non-shooters, not stopping downhill drives, and not boxing out. We're not out-jumping anyone! The scout was spot on, but our attention to detail with the scout was not. If we want to contend in this conference, we have to outwork everyone in every aspect of the game!"

IU Southeast was led by Linzie Wernert who recorded another double-double. Wernert scored a career-high 22 points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. Lexi Starr had 13 points, three rebounds, and a team-high two steals. Ella Brown had 10 points and two blocks off the bench. Taylor Treat had nine points and four rebounds, and Karly Sweeney had six points, eight rebounds, and tied for the team lead with two steals. Jesse Ledgerwood led IU Southeast with five assists.

Rio Grande shot 42.5 percent from the field, and IU Southeast shot 40.8 percent. Both teams hit three threes. Rio Grande went 20-26 from the free throw line, while IU Southeast went just 6-14. The RedStorm out-rebounded the Grenadiers 53-36.

IU Southeast fell to 9-8 overall and 3-4 in RSC play. The Grenadiers return to action on Saturday for a road contest against (RV) Shawnee State.
