OAKLAND CITY, Ind. – A layup by
Trent Hinkle with 0.6 seconds left gave the IU Southeast men's basketball team a 73-71 victory over Oakland City on Wednesday.
After falling behind 4-0, IU Southeast scored 10 straight points to take an early 10-4 lead. Oakland City responded with a 10-0 run of their own to take a 14-10 lead. Oakland City extended their lead to eight at 20-12.
A three by
Caleb Brown cut the Grenadier deficit to five at 22-17, but Oakland City answered with four points to extend their lead to nine at 26-17. IU Southeast made it 28-23, but a 5-0 run gave the Mighty Oaks a 33-23 lead. Oakland City led 33-25 at the half.
Oakland City took a 36-26 lead early in the second half, but a 10-0 Grenadier run allowed IU Southeast to tie the game at 36-36. Oakland City hit a three to take a 39-36 edge, but four straight IU Southeast points gave the Grenadiers a 40-39 lead.
After an Oakland City jumper made it 41-40,
Lane Lauderbaugh connected on a three to give the Grenadiers a 43-41 lead. An
Ashton Myles-Devore three gave IU Southeast a 46-43 advantage.
IU Southeast took a four-point lead at 49-45 on a
Nathaniel Hoffman three. IU Southeast extended their lead to five at 55-50 on a three-point play by
Trent Hinkle.
A jumper by
Ashton Myles-Devore put the Grenadiers up five once more, but Oakland City responded with five straight points to tie the game at 57-57. A pair of
Lane Lauderbaugh free throws gave IU Southeast a 59-57 lead, but a free throw and a three by Oakland City gave the Mighty Oaks a 61-59 advantage with 5:18 left.
Lane Lauderbaugh hit a three to give the lead back to IU Southeast at 62-61. A three-point play by Oakland City swung the lead back in their favor at 64-62, but
Nathaniel Hoffman connected on a three to give the Grenadiers a 65-64 advantage with 3:34 left.
Back-to-back layups by Oakland City gave the Mighty Oaks a 68-65 lead with 2:28 remaining. An
Eli Meyer layup and a
Lane Lauderbaugh free throw allowed IU Southeast to tie the game at 68-68 with 1:35 left.
Oakland City connected on a three to take a 71-68 lead with 1:19 remaining.
Lane Lauderbaugh was fouled on back-to-back possessions and connected on three of four free throws to tie the game at 71-71 with 33 seconds left.
IU Southeast forced an Oakland City turnover with six seconds left.
Trent Hinkle came down and connected on a layup to give IU Southeast the apparent 73-71 win, but after an official review, 0.6 seconds were added to the clock.
Oakland City drew a foul on the inbound pass, but the Mighty Oaks missed both free throws as IU Southeast held on to win 73-71.
"Still can't put two halves together, but we found a way to win," IU Southeast head coach
Wiley Brown said. "In the first half, we turned them over, but we didn't capitalize off their mistakes. We did a better job in the 2
nd half making them pay for their mistakes. We had so much going against us, but we didn't make excuses about not being able to practice. We said we can't control things that's out of our control, but we control our effort. It was a total team effort, but Eli, Trent and Caleb played big for us. Back to the lab!"
Lane Lauderbaugh led IU Southeast with 27 points and seven rebounds.
Ashton Myles-Devore had nine points off the bench, and
Caleb Brown added eight.
Nathaniel Hoffman added eight points and four assists.
Trent Hinkle added seven points, including the game winner.
Camden Pfeister had six points and a team-high four assists.
Eli Meyer had four points, five rebounds, and a team-high three steals.
IU Southeast shot 41.7 percent from the field and 40.9 percent (9-22) from three. The Grenadiers scored 27 points off 20 Oakland City turnovers.
IU Southeast (5-7, 2-1 RSC) returns to action on Saturday for a home conference contest against Brescia.
