Grenadiers Fell Mighty Oaks in Five Sets

OAKLAND CITY, Ind. – The IU Southeast volleyball team escaped with a five-set victory over Oakland City on Tuesday.
 
Set one was back-and-forth until a 4-0 run gave Oakland City a 16-11 lead. IU Southeast fought back to cut the lead to one at 24-23, but it was the Mighty Oaks who took set one 25-23.
 
Set two saw IU Southeast jump ahead 16-9 before a 5-0 run brought Oakland City back within two at 16-14. IU Southeast answered with a 9-3 run to take the second set 25-17.
 
Oakland City led 12-8 in the third set before IU Southeast tied it at 12-12. IU Southeast led 16-15 and then used a 9-2 run to take the third set 25-17.
 
IU Southeast led 9-5 in the fourth set before a 7-0 run put Oakland City ahead 12-9. With Oakland City ahead 15-14, the Mighty Oaks used a mini 5-1 run to take a 20-15 lead. IU Southeast never got within three for the remainder of the set as Oakland City would take the fourth 25-20.
 
Oakland City led 4-3 in the fifth set, but IU Southeast used a 7-0 run to take a 10-4 lead, which would prove to be insurmountable at the Grenadiers would go on to take the fifth set 15-9 and the match 3-2.
 
"As soon as we learn how to play with a target on our back, we're going to be unstoppable," IU Southeast head coach Taylor Wilson-Evanczyk said.
 
Ella Brooks led IU Southeast with 13 kills and added 21 digs and three aces. Nicole Stratford had 11 kills and nine digs. Jordan Vaughan added eight kills and 3.0 blocks. Madison Ramsey led IU Southeast with 6.0 blocks. Carly Mason had 21 assists and six service aces. Esther Woodward added 21 assists, and Ella Davidson led IU Southeast with 27 digs.
 
IU Southeast moves to 16-5 overall and 9-4 in RSC play. The Grenadiers return to action on Friday at Brescia.
