KINGSPORT, Tenn. – The No. 17 ranked IU Southeast baseball team swept both games of a doubleheader against (RV) Northwestern Ohio in Kingsport, Tennessee on Friday.
UNOH got on the board first in game one, using a two-out RBI double in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead.
The game remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth.
Logan Beard was hit by a pitch and both
Jack Ellis and
Colin Long singled to load the bases for IU Southeast with no outs. After a fielder's choice,
Logan Murphy doubled down the left field line to give IU Southeast a 2-1 lead.
Grant Shepherd delivered a two-out, two-RBI single to put IU Southeast ahead 4-1 in the fourth.
UNOH got a run back in the top of the sixth to make it 4-2.
After
Joel Johnson was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the seventh,
Preston Shelton delivered an RBI triple to give IU Southeast a 5-2 lead.
Neither team scored for the remainder of the game as IU Southeast secured a 5-2 win in game one.
Six different Grenadiers had a hit in the win.
Trevor Goodwin and
Logan Murphy doubled, and
Preston Shelton tripled. Murphy and
Grant Shepherd each drove in two runs, and Shelton drove in one.
Connor Sims got the start and the win for IU Southeast. Sims threw six innings, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out four.
Brendan Whalen threw two scoreless in relief, and
Nick Pazos threw a scoreless ninth for his second save of the year.
IU Southeast scored first in game two.
Ethan Burdette led off with a double and came around to score on an RBI single by
Preston Shelton.
UNOH responded in the top of the second, scoring two runs on a fielder's choice and an RBI single to take a 2-1 lead.
IU Southeast didn't trail for long. In the bottom of the second,
Cole Reynolds singled and
Joel Johnson walked to give the Grenadiers two runners on with no outs. After a sacrifice bunt by
Ethan Burdette,
Preston Shelton singled to drive in two runs and give IU Southeast a 3-2 lead.
A solo home run by UNOH tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the third.
The game remained tied at 3-3 until the seventh. Back-to-back RBI doubles gave UNOH a 5-3 lead.
IU Southeast broke the game open in the bottom of the eighth.
Masen Moravec and
Preston Shelton singled to open the inning. After both runners advanced on a wild pitch,
Logan Beard doubled to score both and tie the game at 5-5.
After
Jack Ellis walked,
Colin Long delivered an RBI single to put the Grenadiers ahead 6-5.
Trevor Goodwin walked to load the bases, and
Logan Murphy was hit by a pitch to give IU Southeast a 7-5 advantage.
Cole Reynolds reached on an error and another run scored to make it 8-5.
Masen Moravec was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to put IU Southeast ahead 9-5.
Preston Shelton followed with a bases-clearing triple to make it 12-5 Grenadiers.
Logan Beard followed with an RBI groundout to give IU Southeast a 13-5 advantage.
IU Southeast would go on to win 13-5 to secure a sweep of the doubleheader.
Preston Shelton led IU Southeast with four hits and six RBI. Both
Ethan Burdette and
Colin Long had two hits apiece.
Logan Beard had three RBI. Burdette and Beard doubled, and Shelton tripled in the win.
Luca Sandrella got the start for IU Southeast, allowing two runs in two innings of work.
Gavin Gentry was the bulk pitcher for the Grenadiers, allowing three runs in 4.1 innings.
Gavin Sebby pitched two-thirds of an inning, and
Cade Rusch followed with two scoreless innings to pick up the win.
No. 17 IU Southeast is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday at Campbellsville.
