No. 17 IU Southeast Defeats Huntington and Madonna on Sunday

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The 17th ranked IU Southeast baseball team defeated Huntington 13-4 and walked off Madonna 7-6 on Sunday. Both games were seven inning contests.
 
IU Southeast scored first against Huntington. The first three batters of the game reached base. Colin Long then singled back to the pitcher to give the Grenadiers a 1-0 lead. Logan Murphy followed with a bases clearing double to put IU Southeast ahead 4-0. An Ethan Burdette RBI single made it 5-0 IU Southeast in the first inning.
 
Huntington scored two runs in the bottom of the first to make it 5-2.
 
In the top of the third, a Cole Reynolds RBI double gave IU Southeast a 6-2 edge. An error allowed another run to score to put the Grenadiers ahead 7-2.
 
Huntington scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to bring the score to 7-3.
 
In the top of the sixth, Grant Shepherd and Nolan Bowser walked to give the Grenadiers two runners on with no outs. Preston Shelton delivered an RBI single to make it 8-3. Trevor Goodwin walked to load the bases, and Colin Long walked with the bases loaded to put IU Southeast ahead 9-3. An RBI single by Logan Murphy made it 10-3.
 
Grant Shepherd singled, and Gabe Yonto doubled to open the top of the seventh. Preston Shelton followed with an RBI single to put IU Southeast ahead 11-3. Trevor Goodwin delivered a two-RBI double to made it 13-3.
 
Huntington scored a run in the seventh, but IU Southeast would go on to win 13-4 in seven innings.
 
Preston Shelton and Logan Murphy each had two hits. Murphy had four RBI, and Shelton, Trevor Goodwin, and Colin Long each had two. Cole Reynolds and Ethan Burdette each had one RBI. Gabe Yonto, Goodwin, Murphy, and Reynolds all doubled.
 
Gavin Gentry started and got the win for IU Southeast. Gentry threw four innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out four. Luke Shelton and Conner Christopher V pitched in relief.
 
IU Southeast scored first against Madonna as well. In the bottom of the first, an RBI groundout by Logan Beard put the Grenadiers ahead 1-0.
 
Madonna got the run back in the top of the second to tie the game at 1-1. The game remained tied until the top of the fourth when Madonna scored two runs to take a 3-1 lead.
 
IU Southeast loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fifth. Logan Beard followed with an opposite field grand slam to put IU Southeast ahead 5-3. A solo home run by Logan Murphy in the sixth made it 6-3 Grenadiers.

With one out in the top of the seventh, Madonna hit a three-run home run to tie the game at 6-6.
 
Grant Shepherd reached first on an error to open the bottom of the seventh. Preston Shelton was walked, and Madonna went to the bullpen. After the pitching change, Logan Beard was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Hazel Martinez was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give IU Southeast a 7-6 win in seven innings.
 
IU Southeast only had four hits in the win, but two of them were home runs by Logan Beard and Logan Murphy. Beard led IU Southeast with five RBI. Murphy and Hazel Martinez drove in the other two runs.
 
Luca Sandrella started for IU Southeast and allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits in four innings of work while striking out five. Nick Pazos threw two innings in relief, and Cade Rusch got the win after pitching the seventh.
 
"Getting two wins today is always good, but offensively we have to manufacture with runners in scoring position and eliminate the free bases out of the bullpen," IU Southeast head coach Brett Neffendorf said.
 
No. 17 IU Southeast returns to action on Monday for a nine-inning contest against Madonna in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
