BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The 17
th ranked IU Southeast baseball team defeated Madonna 9-3 on Monday to secure a perfect 3-0 trip to Bowling Green.
Madonna scored first on Monday, using an RBI single in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead.
The scored remained 1-0 until the top of the third. With two runners on and two outs,
Logan Beard connected on his second home run of the three-game set to put IU Southeast ahead 3-1. A walk, a single, and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases.
Logan Murphy was then walked with the bases loaded to make it 4-1 Grenadiers.
Madonna used a two-RBI single in the bottom of the third to cut the Grenadier lead to 4-3.
Cole Reynolds led off the top of the fourth with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Grant Shepherd.
Nolan Bowser followed with an RBI groundout to put IU Southeast up 5-3.
Preston Shelton and
Logan Beard both walked, and a
Hazel Martinez grand-rule double scored Shelton to give the Grenadiers a 6-3 edge.
Ethan Burdette followed with a two-RBI double to make it 8-3 IU Southeast.
An RBI double by
Hazel Martinez in the top of the sixth put IU Southeast ahead 9-3, which would go on to be the final score.
Hazel Martinez and
Ethan Burdette both had two hits in the win.
Logan Beard led IU Southeast with three RBI. Both Martinez and Burdette had two RBI, and
Nolan Bowser and
Logan Murphy each drove in one. Martinez had a pair of doubles, and both Burdette and Reynolds each doubled once. Beard hit the lone home run for IU Southeast.
Jackson Grissom stole a base for the Grenadiers.
Brendan Whalen got the start for IU Southeast, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits in four innings of work.
Zak Rasener picked up the win throwing 3.1 scoreless innings in relief.
Travis Kellems threw 0.2 scoreless, and
Conner Christopher V threw a scoreless ninth.
No. 17 IU Southeast travels to Georgetown for a single game on Wednesday.
