COLUMBUS, Ind. – The IU Southeast men's basketball team fell to IU Columbus 90-88 on Saturday.
IU Columbus jumped out to a 10-4 lead early in the first half to force an IU Southeast timeout. The Grenadiers responded with a 7-0 run to take an 11-10 lead.
The teams traded baskets for several minutes, but a 7-0 run gave the Grenadiers a 22-17 lead. A layup later in the half gave IU Southeast a 30-23 edge.
IU Columbus cut the Grenadier lead to 35-32, but another 7-0 run put IU Southeast ahead 42-32. IU Southeast scored the final eight points of the half to take a 50-34 advantage into halftime.
IU Southeast led by 18 early in the second half. Trailing 58-41, IU Columbus used a 10-0 run to cut the Grenadier lead to seven at 58-51.
The Grenadiers extended their lead to 10, but a 5-0 Crimson Pride run made it a five-point lead at 61-56. IU Columbus made it a two-point game at 63-61 with 12 minutes to go.
IU Southeast took a seven-point lead at 71-64 with 9:17 left. A three by the Grenadiers put IU Southeast ahead 74-66.
IU Columbus cut the Grenadier lead to three at 76-73, but a pair of free throws put the Grenadiers ahead 78-73. IU Columbus connected on a three to make it a two-point game, but a 6-0 IU Southeast run put the Grenadiers ahead 84-76.
IU Southeast led 88-80 with 3:05 remaining. IU Columbus went on a 7-0 run to cut the IU Southeast lead to one at 88-87 with a minute left.
IU Southeast missed a jumper, and IU Columbus came down and connected on a three to put the Crimson Pride ahead 90-88 with seven seconds remaining. IU Southeast had a shot to tie it at the buzzer, but the shot came up short as IU Columbus would secure a 90-88 victory.
"I told them in the locker room at halftime the first five minutes will tell who's going to win this game regardless of how many points we were up," IU Southeast head coach
Wiley Brown said. "We came out, missed a layup, and had a turnover. Missed assignments on defense, left shooters open, and they knocked down shots. It was a really bad loss, but we got what we deserved. Back to the lab!"
Lane Lauderbaugh led IU Southeast with 25 points and also grabbed six rebounds.
Trent Hinkle had 17 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, and five steals.
Xavier Price had 10 points and four rebounds off the bench, and
Nathaniel Hoffman added eight points.
Camden Pfeister had six points, five rebounds, and five assists.
Eli Meyer had six points, eight rebounds, and three blocks, and
Ethan Haddaway added six points as well.
IU Southeast finishes the regular season 11-16 and 6-10 in RSC play. The Grenadiers travel to Shawnee State for the opening round of the RSC Conference Tournament on Wednesday.
