CONVERSE, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball season opened with a split of a doubleheader against No. 12 Indiana Wesleyan on Friday.
In game one, IU Southeast scored first.
Josie Lemmons led off the game with a double and then proceeded to steal third.
Lillian Mackey used an RBI double to give IU Southeast a 1-0 lead.
Sofia Guy followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0. With the bases loaded and two outs,
Chloee Shewmaker delivered a two-RBI single to make it 4-0 IU Southeast.
Indiana Wesleyan followed with five runs in the bottom of the first to take a 5-4 lead. The Wildcats scored six runs in the second to make it 11-4. A run in the bottom of the third made it 12-4, which would be the final score in five innings.
Lillian Mackey and
McKenzie Walters each had two hits.
Chloee Shewmaker led IU Southeast with two RBI.
Josie Lemmons doubled and stole a base.
Hallie Foley got the loss for IU Southeast, throwing 1.1 innings.
Emma Davis threw the final 2.2 innings, striking out seven.
Indiana Wesleyan scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead in game two.
Kaitlyn Leister singled and
McKenzie Walters doubled to give IU Southeast runners on second and third with no outs. An RBI groundout by
Chloee Shewmaker made it 2-1. With the bases loaded,
Brynlea Bennett hit a ball that eluded the first baseman which brought home three runs to give IU Southeast a 4-2 lead.
An RBI single by
Lillian Mackey made it 5-2. With the bases loaded once more,
McKenzie Walters delivered a bases-clearing double to make it 8-2 Grenadiers.
Indiana Wesleyan got a run back in the second to make it 8-3.
Chloee Shewmaker doubled to lead off the third and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Josie Lemmons followed with an RBI single to give IU Southeast a 9-3 lead. Lemmons stole second, advanced to third on a groundout, and came around to score on a wild pitch to make it 10-3.
A three-run home run by Indiana Wesleyan made it 10-6 in the bottom of the third.
Kaitlyn Leister singled to open the fourth and advanced to third on a double by
McKenzie Walters. A
Chloee Shewmaker RBI made it 11-6 IU Southeast.
An error allowed Indiana Wesleyan to score another run to make it 11-7.
The first collegiate home run by
Sofia Guy gave IU Southeast a 12-7 lead in the fifth.
A sacrifice fly by Indiana Wesleyan made it 12-8 in the sixth.
The Wildcats brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but a flyout secured a 12-8 victory for IU Southeast, the first of
Erin Templeman's career as head coach.
Kaitlyn Leister and
McKenzie Walters each had three hits for IU Southeast. Both Walters and
Brynlea Bennett had three RBI. Walters doubled, and
Sofia Guy homered in the win. The Grenadiers stole three bases as well.
Hannah Nunemaker started for IU Southeast, throwing the first three innings.
Elliot Nance got the win, throwing two innings of one-run ball.
Emma Davis threw the final two innings for IU Southeast to secure the win.
"I'm so proud of this team," IU Southeast interim head coach
Erin Templeman said. "We came out hot right from the get-go with the bats (in game two). Scoring eight in one inning really set the tone. Pitchers were able to get in a groove and were able to pitch by committee. This truly was a full team effort and a great win to start the season."
IU Southeast opens their home schedule with a doubleheader against Taylor on Saturday.
