No. 17 IU Southeast Drops Doubleheader to No. 1 Tennessee Wesleyan

ATHENS, Tenn. – The No. 17 ranked IU Southeast baseball team dropped both games of the doubleheader against No. 1 Tennessee Wesleyan on Saturday.
 
Tennessee Wesleyan scored first in game one, using a single, a stolen base, and another single to take a 1-0 lead. A solo home run in the bottom of the third followed by a double and a single gave the Bulldogs a 3-0 advantage.
 
Tennessee Wesleyan hit three solo home runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to 6-0. The Bulldogs scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to blow the game open. A three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth made it 14-0 Tennessee Wesleyan.
 
Masen Moravec and Coulter Hamilton each delivered pinch-hit solo home runs in the top of the seventh, the first of their IU Southeast careers, but Tennessee Wesleyan would go on to win 14-2 in seven innings.
 
The Grenadiers only had five hits in the contest. Grant Shepherd doubled, and Masen Moravec and Coulter Hamilton each homered. Alex Schuler and Trevor Goodwin each singled.
 
Gavin Gentry took the loss for IU Southeast, allowing six runs in 3.2 innings. Daly Skees, Oscar Welsh, and Carson Chandler pitched in relief.
 
IU Southeast scored first in game two. Nolan Bowser walked, and Logan Beard singled to put runners on first and second. Preston Shelton followed with an RBI single to give IU Southeast a 1-0 lead.
 
In the top of the second, Grant Shepherd drew a two-out walk, and Ethan Burdette followed with a single to give the Grenadiers two runners on. Nolan Bowser delivered a two-RBI triple to give IU Southeast a 3-0 lead.
 
The first six batters reached for Tennessee Wesleyan in the bottom of the second as the Bulldogs flipped the game and took a 5-3 lead.
 
A three-run home run in the bottom of the third gave Tennessee Wesleyan an 8-3 advantage. A solo home run in the fourth made it 9-3.
 
Nolan Bowser and Jack Ellis each hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth to cut the Bulldog lead to 9-5. Masen Moravec hit his second home run of the day to narrow the Grenadier deficit to 9-6 in the top of the sixth.
 
Jack Ellis hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh to make it 9-7. IU Southeast brought the tying run to the plate, but a strikeout allowed Tennessee Wesleyan to hold on for a 9-7 win in seven innings.
 
Ethan Burdette, Nolan Bowser, Logan Beard, and Jack Ellis each had two hits in the contest. Nolan Bowser drove in three runs, and Ellis drove in two. Bowser tripled and homered, and Ellis homered twice. Masen Moravec also homered.
 
Gavin Sebby took the loss for IU Southeast, allowing five runs in 1+ innings of work. Cade Rusch, Zak Rasener, Hunter Niksch, and Nick Pazos followed in relief.
 
"Tough day all around in game one," IU Southeast head coach Brett Neffendorf said. "Competed better in game two and had our chances."
 
No. 17 IU Southeast continues their gauntlet against ranked teams as the Grenadiers travel to No. 5 University of the Cumberlands on Tuesday.
