COLUMBUS, Ind. – The 16
th ranked IU Southeast baseball team cruised to a 17-1 win over IU Columbus to extend their winning streak to five.
IU Southeast took a 1-0 lead in the first on a bases loaded walk by
Preston Shelton.
Colin Long followed with a two-RBI single to make it 3-0, and a three-run home run by
Hazel Martinez gave the Grenadiers a 6-0 lead.
IU Columbus got one back in the first to make it 6-1.
An RBI double by
Colin Long in the third made it 7-1 IU Southeast.
An RBI double in the fourth by
Nolan Bowser put the Grenadiers ahead 8-1.
Logan Murphy was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fifth to give IU Southeast a 9-1 lead.
Nolan Bowser was then hit by a pitch to make it 10-1. Two runs came around to score on an error, and an RBI groundout by
Logan Beard made it 13-1 Grenadiers.
An RBI double by
Preston Shelton gave IU Southeast a 14-1 lead. An RBI single by
Colin Long made the advantage 15-1.
A sacrifice fly by
Slade Douthett in the seventh put IU Southeast ahead 16-1. Another run came around to score to increase the lead to 17-1, which would go on to be the final score.
"Good start to the series," IU Southeast head coach
Brett Neffendorf said. "Pitching was good, and the offense capitalized on some things but would like to see us stay in our approach a little more, but overall, the offense did more than enough to get the win."
Colin Long led IU Southeast with four hits and four RBI. Long,
Nolan Bowser, and
Preston Shelton all doubled, and
Hazel Martinez homered.
Gavin Gentry got the start and the win, allowing just one run in five innings of work.
Cade Rusch and
Coulter Hamilton both threw scoreless innings in relief.
No. 16 IU Southeast (17-6 overall, 6-1 RSC) concludes their series with IU Columbus with a doubleheader on Friday.
