NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team dropped a pair of games to (RV) Rio Grande on Thursday.
In game one, IU Southeast used an RBI single by
Sofia Guy in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead.
Rio Grande scored a run in the second to tie the game at 1-1.
The game remained 1-1 until the sixth, when Rio scored a run to take a 2-1 lead.
Another run by Rio in the seventh made it 3-1, which would be the final score.
IU Southeast only had four hits in the game.
Sofia Guy had the lone RBI.
Josie Lemmons and
Sofia Guy each stole a base.
Emma Davis took the loss, allowing three runs (one earned) in seven innings of work.
In game two, IU Southeast used back-to-back sacrifice flies by
Sofia Guy and
McKenzie Walters to take a 2-0 lead. An RBI double by
Kaitlyn Leister put the Grenadiers up 3-0.
Rio Grande scored three runs in the third to tie the game at 3-3.
The game would remain 3-3 through seven innings.
In the top of the eighth, Rio scored to make it 4-3. The RedStorm added another run to take a 5-3 lead.
A sacrifice fly by
Lillian Mackey made it 5-4, but Rio Grande got the final two outs to secure the win.
Brynlea Bennett led IU Southeast with two hits, including a triple.
Kaitlyn Leister added a double.
Brynlea Bennett also added a stolen base.
Hallie Foley started, allowing three runs in five innings.
Hannah Nunemaker took the loss, allowing two runs in three innings.
"Hard fought two games," IU Southeast interim head coach
Erin Templeman said. "Fell a little short. Both sides battled hard. Pitchers threw well in both games. Came down to the wire, just fell short."
IU Southeast falls to 9-7 overall and 5-3 in RSC play. The Grenadiers return to action on Friday for a home doubleheader against Shawnee State.
