NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team split a doubleheader with Shawnee State on Friday.
Shawnee State scored four runs in the second to take a 4-0 lead in game one.
An RBI double by
Alaina Winzeler in the second got IU Southeast on the board, but Shawnee State scored a run in the third to make it 5-1. Another run in the fourth made it 6-1 Bears.
An RBI single by
Alaina Winzeler in the fourth cut the lead to 6-2. An RBI single by
Grace Stapleton made it 6-3, and a
Josie Lemmons walk with the bases loaded made it 6-4.
Brynlea Bennett was hit with the bases loaded to cut the lead to one at 6-5. A two-RBI double by
Lillian Mackey gave IU Southeast their first lead at 7-6. An RBI single by
Sofia Guy made it 8-6, and an RBI groundout by
Kaitlyn Leister gave IU Southeast a 9-6 lead.
Shawnee State scored a run in the sixth to make it 9-7, but an RBI double by
Kaitlyn Leister got the run back for IU Southeast. A two-RBI single by
McKenzie Walters gave IU Southeast a 12-7 edge.
Shawnee State scored a run in the seventh, but IU Southeast secured a wild 12-8 win.
McKenzie Walters led IU Southeast with three hits. Four Grenadiers had two RBI.
Lillian Mackey,
Kaitlyn Leister, and
Alaina Winzeler all doubled.
Emma Davis got the start and the win, allowing one earned run in four innings.
Hallie Foley picked up the save, allowing one earned run in three innings of relief.
Alaina Winzeler kicked off game two with an RBI double in the second to give the Grenadiers a 1-0 lead. Shawnee State scored a run in the third to tie the game at 1-1.
Shawnee State scored four runs in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead.
An RBI single by
Kaitlyn Leister in the fourth cut the lead to 5-2.
Shawnee State scored three runs in the sixth to break the game open and take an 8-2 lead, which would be the final score.
No Grenadier had more than one hit.
Josie Lemmons and
Alaina Winzeler both doubled.
Hannah Nunemaker took the loss, allowing five earned runs in a complete game effort.
"Great comeback win in game one," IU Southeast interim head coach
Erin Templeman said. "Hitting and plate discipline makes up for some errors on defense early in the game, but they never lost their drive in game one. Game two, the other team just outhit us, and we gave up a few opportunities on defense."
IU Southeast (10-8, 6-4 RSC) returns to action on Tuesday for a doubleheader at Oakland City.
