IU Southeast Splits Doubleheader with Oakland City

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team split a doubleheader with Oakland City on Tuesday.
 
IU Southeast scored first in game one. In the first, an RBI single by Brynlea Bennett gave the Grenadiers a 1-0 lead. A Kaitlyn Leister walk with the bases loaded made it 2-0, and a sacrifice fly by McKenzie Walters made it 3-0. An RBI fielder's choice by Alaina Winzeler gave IU Southeast a 4-0 lead, and an RBI single by Chloee Shewmaker made it 5-0.
 
A two-RBI double in the second by Sofia Guy put IU Southeast up 7-0. An RBI by McKenzie Walters made it 8-0, and an RBI single by Josie Lemmons put the Grenadiers ahead 9-0.
 
A two-RBI double by Brynlea Bennett in the fourth gave IU Southeast an 11-0 lead. An RBI double by Lillian Mackey put the Grenadiers ahead 12-0.
 
Oakland City scored two in the fifth, but IU Southeast would win 12-2 in five innings.
 
Brynlea Bennett and Grace Stapleton each had three hits. Bennett had a team-high three RBI. Bennett, Lillian Mackey, and Sofia Guy each doubled. Josie Lemmons and Alaina Winzeler each stole a base.
 
Emma Davis got the win, allowing two runs in five innings while striking out six.
 
Game two saw Oakland City score three runs in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead, which would be the only runs scored in the game.
 
IU Southeast only had five hits, two of which came from McKenzie Walters.
 
Hallie Foley took the loss, allowing three runs in six innings of work.
 
"Game one was solid," IU Southeast interim head coach Erin Templeman said. "Bats came out hot scoring five in the first inning. Emma has been throwing well all season and threw a great game. Game two, Hallie pitched great. We just couldn't get the bats rolling or make adjustments to give her some runs on the board."
 
IU Southeast (11-9 overall, 7-5 RSC) returns to action on Saturday for a home doubleheader against Midway.
