NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team swept Midway in a wild doubleheader on Saturday.
Game one began as a pitcher's duel as the game was tied 0-0 after three innings.
Midway scored three runs in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead.
An RBI single by
Josie Lemmons in the fourth made it 3-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, a two-RBI single by
Savannah Gaither tied the game at 3-3.
Midway retook the lead in the top of the sixth on an RBI single, but a two-RBI double in the bottom of the sixth by
Lillian Mackey gave IU Southeast their first lead at 5-4.
An RBI single by
Alaina Winzeler made it 6-4, and another run came around to score on an error to make it 7-4, which would be the final score.
Savannah Gaither led IU Southeast with three hits and two RBI.
Lillian Mackey and
McKenzie Walters both doubled. Gaither and
Brynlea Bennett stole a base in the win.
Emma Davis got the win, throwing a complete game. Davis allowed three earned runs in seven innings and struck out six.
Midway scored a run in the top of the first of game two to take a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, an RBI groundout by
Brynlea Bennett tied the game at 1-1.
IU Southeast scored a run on a throwing error in the bottom of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. An RBI groundout by
Lillian Mackey made it 3-1, and a two-RBI single by
Sofia Guy gave IU Southeast a 5-1 lead.
Midway answered with four runs in the fifth to tie the game at 5-5.
An RBI double by
Grace Stapleton in the fifth gave IU Southeast a 6-5 lead. An RBI triple by
Josie Lemmons made it 7-5, and an RBI single by
Brynlea Bennett gave the Grenadiers an 8-5 lead. A double steal put IU Southeast up 9-5, and a two-RBI single by
Kaitlyn Leister made it 11-5.
Midway responded with five runs in the sixth to cut the IU Southeast lead to 11-10.
A two-RBI double by
Josie Lemmons gave IU Southeast a 13-10 lead. An RBI single by
Lillian Mackey made it 14-10, and an RBI groundout by
Kaitlyn Leister put IU Southeast ahead 15-10. RBI singles by
McKenzie Walters and
Alaina Winzeler gave the Grenadiers a 17-10 lead, which would be the final score.
Josie Lemmons led IU Southeast with four hits and three RBI.
Kaitlyn Leister also had three RBI. Lemmons doubled and tripled, and
Grace Stapleton doubled.
Sofia Guy stole two bases, and
Brynlea Bennett,
Haley Fuhr, and
Emily Wolf all stole a base.
Hannah Nunemaker got the win, allowing two earned runs in five innings while striking out four.
Hallie Foley closed the game with two innings in relief.
"Game one, bats got going in the 4
th," IU Southeast interim head coach
Erin Templeman said. "Both games we executed with timely hitting. The only thing holding this team back is the errors on defense."
IU Southeast moves to 13-9 overall and 9-5 in RSC play. The Grenadiers return to action next Saturday at WVU Tech.
