NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The 14
th ranked IU Southeast baseball team swept Brescia in a doubleheader to clinch the weekend series win.
Brescia scored in the top of the first of game one to take a 1-0 lead. An RBI by
Trevor Goodwin in the bottom of the first tied the game at 1-1.
In the bottom of the third, a sacrifice fly by
Preston Shelton gave IU Southeast a 2-1 lead.
Brescia scored three runs in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, a two-RBI double by
Logan Beard tied the game at 4-4. A bases-clearing double by
Trevor Goodwin put IU Southeast ahead 7-4.
A
Nolan Bowser walk with the bases loaded in the fifth extended the IU Southeast lead to 8-4. An RBI single by
Logan Beard made it 9-4, and an RBI fielder's choice by
Preston Shelton made it 10-4. A sacrifice fly by
Colin Long put the Grenadiers up 11-4.
In the bottom of the seventh, an RBI double by
Colin Long put IU Southeast ahead 12-4. A sacrifice fly by
Jack Ellis made it 13-4, and an RBI single by
Logan Murphy secured a 14-4 run-rule win for the Grenadiers.
Logan Beard,
Colin Long, and
Logan Murphy all had two hits.
Trevor Goodwin led IU Southeast with four RBI. Beard, Goodwin, and Long all doubled.
Grant Shepherd,
Preston Shelton, and
Cole Reynolds all stole a base.
Brendan Whalen got the win, allowing three earned runs in 6.2 innings while striking out four.
Travis Kellems came in in relief and got the final out of the seventh.
Nolan Bowser led off the bottom of the first of game two with a solo home run to give IU Southeast a 1-0 lead. A solo home run by
Logan Beard two batters later put the Grenadiers ahead 2-0.
Hazel Martinez led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run to make it 3-0. A sacrifice fly by
Logan Murphy made it 4-0 Grenadiers.
A run came around to score on an error in the bottom of the third to put IU Southeast ahead 5-0.
Hazel Martinez followed with his second home run of the game to make it 7-0 Grenadiers.
Brescia scored a run in the fourth to make it 7-1, but a double steal allowed IU Southeast to get the run back and take an 8-1 lead.
Kannon Stull hit a solo home run in the sixth to put IU Southeast ahead 9-1. A sacrifice fly by
Coulter Hamilton made it 10-1, which would be the final score.
Nolan Bowser and
Hazel Martinez led IU Southeast with three hits apiece. Martinez led the Grenadiers with three RBI.
Joel Johnson doubled, and
Cole Reynolds tripled. Martinez hit two home runs, and
Nolan Bowser,
Kannon Stull and
Logan Beard all homered as well.
Ethan Burdette,
Logan Beard, and
Trevor Goodwin all stole a base.
Luca Sandrella got the start and the win, allowing just three hits and one run in five innings of work.
Cade Rusch threw a scoreless inning in relief, and
Luke Shelton,
Daly Skees, and
Nick Pazos combined to close the game.
"The response in today's doubleheader was exactly what we hoped for," IU Southeast head coach
Brett Neffendorf said. "The execution on the mound was where it needed to be, and the offensive approaches were better."
No. 14 IU Southeast moves to 22-7 overall and 10-2 in RSC play. The Grenadiers return to action next Friday when they open a three-game set against No. 5 Reinhardt.
