NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team swept Brescia in a doubleheader to open conference play on Tuesday.
In the first inning of game one, a
Lillian Mackey RBI single put the Grenadiers ahead 1-0.
In the bottom of the third, a sacrifice fly by
Brynlea Bennett put IU Southeast up 2-0. A
Chloee Shewmaker sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth gave IU Southeast a 3-0 lead. An error allowed IU Southeast to score another run and take a 4-0 lead.
Brescia used an RBI single in the sixth to cut the lead to 4-1. The Bearcats brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but a popout secured a 4-1 victory for IU Southeast.
Josie Lemmons led IU Southeast with two hits, including a double. Both Lemmons and
Alaina Winzeler stole a base.
Emma Davis got the start and the win, allowing just one run in a complete game performance while striking out seven.
IU Southeast took the lead in the bottom of the first in game two. A
Brynlea Bennett RBI triple gave IU Southeast a 1-0 lead. An error gave IU Southeast a 2-0 lead, and an RBI single by
Maddy Olander put the Grenadiers ahead 3-0 in the first inning.
Another RBI triple by
Brynlea Bennett gave IU Southeast a 4-0 lead in the second.
McKenzie Walters delivered an RBI double in the fourth to give the Grenadiers a 5-0 lead.
A sacrifice fly by
Haley Fuhr in the fifth put IU Southeast ahead 6-0.
Josie Lemmons delivered an RBI single to make it 7-0, and an RBI single by
Brynlea Bennett gave IU Southeast an 8-0 run-rule victory.
Josie Lemmons and
Brynlea Bennett both had three hits. Bennett also had three RBI.
McKenzie Walters doubled, and Bennett had two triples. Lemmons and Walters each stole a base.
Hallie Foley got the start and the win, allowing just three hits in five scoreless innings.
IU Southeast (4-4, 2-0 RSC) returns to action on Friday at IU Columbus.
