COLUMBUS, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team split a doubleheader with IU Columbus on Friday.
IU Southeast opened the scoring in the top of the first with an RBI fielder's choice by
Kaitlyn Leister. A two-RBI single by
Maddy Olander made it 3-0. Back-to-back bases loaded walks by
Alaina Winzeler and
Josie Lemmons gave IU Southeast a 5-0 lead.
An RBI single by
Maddy Olander in the top of the second made it 6-0 Grenadiers. A
Chloee Shewmaker RBI single made it 7-0, and a three-run home run by
Alaina Winzeler gave the Grenadiers a 10-0 lead.
A solo home run by
Lillian Mackey in the top of the third extended the Grenadier lead to 11-0. An RBI single by
McKenzie Walters put IU Southeast ahead 12-0.
IU Columbus scored a run in the third to make it 12-1.
A pinch-hit home run by
Emma Shirley in the fourth put IU Southeast up 13-1. An RBI double by
Brynlea Bennett made it 14-1, and an RBI double by
Lillian Mackey made it 15-1.
IU Southeast used a two-RBI single by
Brynlea Bennett to take a 17-1 lead in the fifth. Another run came across on a wild pitch, and an RBI single by
Lillian Mackey made it 19-1.
IU Columbus scored three in the fifth, but IU Southeast cruised to a 19-4 win in five innings.
Lillian Mackey went 5-5 with a double and a home run.
Alaina Winzeler led IU Southeast with four RBI. Mackey,
Brynlea Bennett, and
Maddy Olander each drove in three runs. The home runs by Mackey, Winzeler, and
Emma Shirley were all their first as a Grenadier.
Emma Davis got the win, throwing all five innings while striking out six.
IU Columbus scored five runs with two outs in the second inning of game two after two errors by IU Southeast.
A two-RBI double by
Chloee Shewmaker in the fourth brought IU Southeast within three at 5-2.
An RBI single by
Alaina Winzeler in the sixth made it 5-3, but the Grenadiers would not score again as IU Columbus secured a 5-3 win.
Emily Wolf and
Chloee Shewmaker doubled in the loss.
Elliot Nance took the loss, allowing five unearned runs in 1.2 innings.
Hallie Foley threw 4.1 scoreless innings in relief.
"Bats were hot from the get-go," IU Southeast interim head coach
Erin Templeman said. "Scoring runs in every inning lead to success in game one. Game two, we just didn't show up. We were flat from the start and had too many errors on defense. We also didn't make great adjustments as the plate."
IU Southeast (5-5, 3-1 RSC) travels to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods for an RSC showdown on Saturday.
