NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The 11
th ranked IU Southeast baseball team defeated Rio Grande 10-4 on Friday.
The game began as a pitcher's duel as the contest remained in a scoreless tie until the fifth.
An RBI single by
Nolan Bowser gave IU Southeast a 1-0 lead in the fifth. A throwing error allowed another run to score to make it 2-0.
Rio Grande scored two runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 2-2. Another run in the top of the seventh put the RedStorm ahead 3-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, a two-RBI single by
Cole Reynolds put IU Southeast back in the lead at 4-3. An RBI fielder's choice by
Nolan Bowser gave IU Southeast a 5-3 lead. A two-RBI single by
Hazel Martinez put the Grenadiers ahead 7-3.
Rio Grande scored a run in the eighth to make it 7-4.
A
Grant Shepherd walk with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth put IU Southeast up 8-4. Two sacrifice flies by
Nolan Bowser and
Logan Beard put IU Southeast ahead 10-4, which would be the final score.
"Great pitching and some timely offense in the middle third and last third of the game to start the series off the right way," IU Southeast head coach
Brett Neffendorf said.
Logan Beard and
Kannon Stull both had two hits.
Nolan Bowser led IU Southeast with three RBI.
Logan Murphy doubled for the lone extra base hit for the Grenadiers. IU Southeast stole six bases in the win.
Eli Laurent got the start and the win, allowing three runs in seven innings.
Cade Rusch threw the eighth, and
Nick Pazos threw the ninth in the win.
No. 11 IU Southeast moves to 26-9 overall and 13-2 in RSC play. The Grenadiers wrap up their three-game series with Rio Grande with a doubleheader on Saturday.
