NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The 11
th ranked IU Southeast baseball team swept Rio Grande in a doubleheader on Saturday.
IU Southeast scored first in game one. An RBI single by
Preston Shelton put the Grenadiers ahead 1-0. A two-RBI single by
Jack Ellis made it 3-0, and a wild pitch brought in another run to make it 4-0.
Rio Grande scored two runs in the fourth to make it 4-2.
In the bottom of the fourth, an RBI double by
Nolan Bowser put IU Southeast ahead 5-2. An RBI single by
Ethan Burdette made it 6-2, and an RBI single by
Trevor Goodwin made it 7-2. An RBI double by
Colin Long put the Grenadiers ahead 8-2.
An RBI single by
Preston Shelton in the bottom of the sixth put IU Southeast ahead 9-2.
Rio Grande scored two runs in the seventh and three runs in the eighth to narrow the IU Southeast lead to 9-7.
A sacrifice fly by
Coulter Hamilton in the eighth made it 10-7, which would go on to be the final score.
Nolan Bowser and
Preston Shelton both had three hits. Shelton and
Jack Ellis each drove in two runs. Bowser had two doubles, and
Colin Long doubled as well. Shelton, Long, and
Ethan Burdette each stole a base.
Brendan Whalen started and threw three scoreless innings.

Daly Skees and
Nick Pazos followed in relief, with Pazos picking up his sixth save of the season.
A solo home run by Rio Grande in the third inning of game two put the RedStorm ahead 1-0.
An RBI single by
Preston Shelton in the fourth tied the game at 1-1. A two-RBI single by
Coulter Hamilton put the Grenadiers ahead 3-1.
Rio Grande scored a run in the fifth to make it 3-2.
A bases loaded walk by
Hazel Martinez in the bottom of the fifth made it 4-2 IU Southeast. A sacrifice fly by
Preston Shelton made it 5-2, and an RBI bunt by
Colin Long made it 6-2, which would be the final score.
Trevor Goodwin had two hits including a double. Both
Preston Shelton and
Coulter Hamilton had two RBI.
Gavin Gentry got the win, allowing one run in four innings.
Cade Rusch,
Aiden Darlage, and
Nick Pazos followed in relief.
"Always good to sweep a conference weekend," IU Southeast head coach
Brett Neffendorf said. "The offense capitalized in some big moments and the bullpen pitched in some big innings."
No. 11 IU Southeast moves to 28-9 overall and 15-2 in RSC play. The Grenadiers host Indiana Wesleyan on Tuesday.
