MIDWAY, Ky. – The IU Southeast softball team swept Midway in a doubleheader on Friday.
Game one was an absolute pitcher's duel. There were a combined eight hits in the first six innings of the game. The teams were knotted at 0-0 heading into the seventh.
With one out in the top of the seventh,
Hannah Nunemaker connected on a solo home run to put IU Southeast ahead 1-0. An RBI single by
Lillian Mackey put the Grenadiers ahead 2-0, which would be the final score.
Josie Lemmons,
Lillian Mackey, and
Kaitlyn Leister each had two hits.
Brynlea Bennett doubled, and
Hannah Nunemaker homered.
Josie Lemmons stole a base.
In addition to a hitting a home run,
Hannah Nunemaker threw a two-hit complete game shutout.
In the second inning of game two, a
McKenzie Walters RBI double put IU Southeast ahead 1-0. A double steal put IU Southeast ahead 2-0, and an RBI single by
Kaitlyn Chitwood made it 3-0. An RBI groundout by
Brynlea Bennett made it 4-0, and an RBI single by
Lillian Mackey put the Grenadiers ahead 5-0.
An RBI single by
McKenzie Walters in the fifth put IU Southeast ahead 6-0.
Midway answered with three runs in the fifth to make it 6-3. The Eagles loaded the bases in the sixth with one out but were unable to score. IU Southeast would go on to win 6-3.
Kaitlyn Leister had three hits, all doubles.
McKenzie Walters and
Lillian Mackey also doubled.
Josie Lemmons,
McKenzie Walters, and
Alaina Winzeler all stole a base.
Emma Davis got the win, allowing three runs in 4.2 innings.
Hallie Foley threw 1.1 innings in relief, and
Hannah Nunemaker threw a scoreless seventh to pick up the save.
"Big shoutout to Hannah," IU Southeast interim head coach
Erin Templeman said. "She's been killing it lately and I couldn't be more proud. Really proud of the fight of the team and a good two wins."
IU Southeast moves to 24-14 overall and 20-10 in RSC play. The Grenadiers conclude their regular season with a home doubleheader against WVU Tech.
