WESTFIELD, Ind. – The No. 11 ranked IU Southeast baseball team swept Shawnee State in a doubleheader on Monday.
IU Southeast scored five runs in the top of the second of game one to take a 5-0 lead. Shawnee State scored three in the second to make it 5-3. The score was 6-5 IU Southeast after three innings.
A grand slam by
Trevor Goodwin in the ninth made it 10-5 IU Southeast. The Grenadiers would go on to win 10-6.
Jack Ellis,
Hazel Martinez,
Logan Murphy, and
Cole Reynolds each had two hits.
Trevor Goodwin led IU Southeast with four RBI.
Jack Ellis,
Logan Beard, and
Preston Shelton each doubled.
Logan Murphy and
Trevor Goodwin homered in the win.
Cole Reynolds stole a base for IU Southeast.
Brendan Whalen got the start and the win, allowing five runs in seven innings while striking out seven.
Nick Pazos picked up the save, allowing one run in two innings while striking out four.
Shawnee State took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game two. IU Southeast scored two in the third to take a 2-1 lead, but Shawnee State answered with three runs in the third to take a 4-2 lead.
IU Southeast scored two runs in the fifth to tie the game at 4-4. The Grenadiers scored a run in the sixth to take a 5-4 lead, which would be the final score.
Hazel Martinez led IU Southeast with two hits, including a triple.
Logan Beard homered, and
Cole Reynolds stole a base.
Luca Sandrella got the win, allowing three runs in a seven-inning complete game performance while striking out nine.
"For not having played in over a week, we were a little off timing offensively," IU Southeast head coach
Brett Neffendorf said. "But we found a way to win behind some timely hitting and two really good starting pitching performances."
No. 11 IU Southeast moves to 25-9 overall and 12-2 in RSC play. The Grenadiers host Rio Grande for a series starting on Friday.
