NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team swept IU Columbus on Tuesday to extend their winning streak to eight games.
IU Columbus scored two runs in the first to take a 2-0 lead. An RBI single by
Lillian Mackey in the bottom of the first made it 2-1. An RBI single by
Kaitlyn Leister tied it at 2-2, and a sacrifice fly by
McKenzie Walters gave the Grenadiers a 3-2 lead. An RBI single by
Alaina Winzeler put IU Southeast ahead 4-2.
IU Columbus answered with four runs in the second to take a 6-4 lead. The Crimson Pride scored two more runs in the third to extend their advantage to 8-4.
In the bottom of the third, an RBI single by
Grace Stapleton made it 8-5. A two-RBI single by
Lillian Mackey made it 8-7, and a wild pitch brought Mackey home to tie the game at 8-8.
In the bottom of the fourth, an RBI single by
Emma Shirley gave IU Southeast a 9-8 lead. An RBI single by
Allie Joiner made it 10-8, and a bases loaded walk by
Grace Stapleton put the Grenadiers ahead 11-8.
A bases-clearing double by
Lillian Mackey made it 14-8 IU Southeast. An RBI double by
Sofia Guy made it 15-8, and another run came around to score on a
Kaitlyn Leister single to make it 16-8. An RBI single by
Emma Shirley put the Grenadiers ahead 17-8.
IU Columbus scored four in the fifth to make it 17-12.
An RBI bunt by
Grace Stapleton in the fifth put IU Southeast ahead 18-12. An RBI double by
Lillian Mackey made it 19-12, and a sacrifice fly by
Kaitlyn Leister gave IU Southeast a 20-12 run-rule win in five innings.
Eight Grenadiers had a multi-hit game.
Lillian Mackey led IU Southeast with four hits and seven RBI.
Kaitlyn Leister also had four hits. IU Southeast had five doubles and five stolen bases in the win.
Emma Davis started, allowing six earned runs in three innings.
Hallie Foley got the win, allowing two earned runs in two innings of work.
Game two was the opposite of game one. The game remained scoreless until the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth,
Josie Lemmons stole second and came around to score on two throwing errors to give IU Southeast a 1-0 lead. An RBI single by
Sofia Guy made it 2-0, and an RBI single by
Kaitlyn Leister made it 3-0. Two more errors allowed
Sofia Guy to come around and score to make it 4-0.
IU Columbus scored a run in the sixth, but it was IU Southeast who came away with a 4-1 win.
Josie Lemmons led IU Southeast with two hits. Lemmons also stole a base.
Hallie Foley got the win, allowing one run in a seven-inning complete game performance.
"Game one was neck and neck for a bit with the bats," IU Southeast interim head coach
Erin Templeman said. "Both sides traded hit for hit. We finally broke it open in the fourth and fifth inning and just flat out executed offensively. Game two, Hallie threw amazing. We were able to get the sticks going but could've done a better job earlier on with runners in scoring position."
IU Southeast moves to 19-9 overall and 15-5 in RSC play. The Grenadiers host SMWC for a doubleheader on Wednesday.
