FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IU Southeast volleyball team split a pair of matches to kick off the Liz Lykowski Memorial Tournament hosted by Indiana Tech. On Friday, the Grenadiers fell to Saint Ambrose 3-1 but swept IU Northwest.
Saint Ambrose took a 19-13 lead in set one, but IU Southeast stormed back to tie the set at 23-23. IU Southeast got it to set point at 26-25, but three straight Saint Ambrose points gave the Bees a 28-26 first set win.
Set two saw back and forth action before SAU rallied to take a 17-13 lead. The Grenadiers tied the set at 23-23 once more, but back-to-back points gave Saint Ambrose a 25-23 second set win.
IU Southeast jumped ahead 12-6 in set three. SAU came back to tie the set at 17-17. The teams traded points, but it was the Grenadiers who took the third set.
Set four was another competitive back-and-forth affair, but the Bees pulled away late to take the fourth set and claim the match 3-1.
Set one of IU Northwest against IU Southeast was dominated by the Grenadiers. IU Southeast used a 12-2 run to cruise to a 25-12 set one win.
IUN led 9-4 in set two, but a 9-1 IUS run gave the Grenadiers a 13-10 lead. IU Southeast pulled away late to take the second set 25-19.
IU Southeast rolled in the third set, completing the sweep with a 25-14 victory.
"It was awesome to get back on the court after a weekend off and watch our team make changes that we have been working on at practice," IU Southeast head volleyball coach Taylor Wilson-Evanczyk said. "A rough/slow start ended in our first loss of the season, but the grit shown in our five-minute turnaround to come out on top was a monumental moment for us and the culture we are working hard to build."
The Grenadiers now stand at 3-1 on the season. IU Southeast returns to action on Saturday for matches against Lourdes and Milligan.
