Grenadiers Knock Off Shawnee State 91-79

NEW ALBANY, Ind . – A second-half surge sent IU Southeast past Shawnee State 91-79 on Saturday.
 
Jesse Ledgerwood had 28 points, Grace Stapleton had 23 points, seven rebounds and six assists, Morgan Roberts had 20 points and Linzie Wernert had 14 points and 12 rebounds.
 
The Grenadiers trailed 20-12 late in the first quarter before a three by Morgan Roberts cut the lead to five.
 
In the second quarter, Ledgerwood scored 12 of the Grenadiers' 23 points in the period with two three-pointers and six free-throws.
 
Shawnee State led by seven to start the period but the Grenadiers chipped away and tok the lead on a three by Ledgerwood 34-32 with 1:50 to play in the half.
 
After a foul and then a technical on Lauren Hawthorne, Ledgerwood hit three free-throws to extend the lead to 38-32.
 
A layup by Miyoshi Ellis cut the Grenadier lead to 38-34 at halftime.
 
After the Bears took a 41-40 lead in the third quarter, IU Southeast scored 10 of the next 11 points capped off by a Stapleton steal which led to a layup and foul for Jesse Ledgerwood, who completed the three-point play.
 
Back-to-back threes by Roberts and Stapleton extended the lead to 12 points and Shawnee State could only cut the lead to 66-55 at the end of the third quarter.
 
In the fourth quarter, a layup by Jariah Steele cut the lead to 75-67 with under five minutes to play but Roberst came through with a huge three-pointer and then got a layup on the next possession to extend the lead to 80-67.
 
The Grenadiers hit 10-of-13 free-throws in the fourth quarter to seal the win. They held Shawnee State to just 38 percent shooting in the final frame.
 
"I am proud of our fight and focus for 40 minutes," head coach Abby Downard said. "Everyone stepped up and did whatever it took to win the game. I am really proud of our team, they earned this one! Back to work!"
 
Jesse Ledgerwood tied the career three-point field goals made mark with four in the contest.
 
IU Southeast hosts IU Kokomo Tuesday at 6 p.m., weather permitting.
