TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -
Trent Hinkle had 25 points and six assists while
Bailey Temming added 16 points and eight rebounds to send visiting IU Southeast past St. Mary -of-the-Woods 79-71 on Tuesday.
The Grenadiers forced 19 turnovers which led to 21 points to get them back in the contest after trailing early.
A jumper by Hinkle followed by a three-pointer by
Isaac Strunk gave the Grenadiers a 20-16 lead halfway through the opening period and the lead went back-and-forth. The Pomeroys closed the half on a 7-2 run to take a 37-33 lead at halftime.
A quick 8-0 run to start the second half by SMWC extended the lead to 45-33 but the Grenadiers got back in the game quickly.
A three-pointer by
Nathaniel Hoffman followed by a three-point play by
Xavier Price cut the lead back to 47-39.
A turnover followed by a three by Hinkle and another defensive stop followed by a layup by Temming cut the deficit to 47-44 with 14 minutes to play.
A dunk by Quamari Hobbs followed by a three by Malachi Pearson put IU Southeast back in a 54-46 deficit but again they rallied.
IU Southeast scored 11 of the next 14 points to tie the contest with eight minutes to play. Then back-to-back scores by Temming and
Jordan Treat put the Grenadiers in front 61-59.
After the game was tied for the eighth time at 63, IU Southeast pulled away on a 8-0 run.
IU Southeast took over the offensive glass in the second half. Temming scored on a layup and then
Ethan Haddaway got offensive rebounds and putbacks on consecutive possessions to extend the lead to 69-63. Then Temming got an offensive rebound and Haddaway scored to push the lead to 71-63.
The Pomeroys cut the lead to 74-68 but clutch free-throws by Hinkle and
Camden Pfeister secured the win.
Bailey Temming and
Ethan Haddaway combined to score 18 points and grab 10 rebounds in the second half to spark the Grenadier offense.
"This was a great team win," head coach
Wiley Brown said. "We didn't get too high or too low when they went up 12 points. Our pressure turned them over and we scored 21 points off of turnovers. Back to the lab!
IU Southeast hosts Rio Grande Saturday at 3 p.m.
