NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast women's basketball team held St. Mary-of-the-Woods to just four points in the second quarter and nine in the fourth en route to an 83-36 win on Tuesday.
"This was a solid team win tonight," head coach Abby Downard said. "We have a lot to continue to work on but we will be better! Back to work to prepare for Saturday."
Grace Stapleton led IU Southeast with 22 points and 10 rebounds while
Jesse Ledgerwood added 19 points.
Morgan Roberts had 14 points, five rebounds and three blocks off the bench.
A swarming Grenadier defense forced 29 turnovers which led to 29 Grenadier points. IU Southeast did not surrender the first field goal from the Pomeroys until the 2:18 mark of the first quarter.
IU Southeast opened the game on a 20-8 run and did not look back.
Grace Stapleton had 13 of her 22 points in the first quarter on six of seven shooting from the field.
The Grenadiers outscored the Pomeroys 16-4 in the second quarter and led 39-14 at halftime.
One of the defensive highlights came in the third quarter when Ledgerwood assisted on a
Linzie Wernert layup, then she stole the inbounds pass and recorded a layup of her own to extend the lead to 47-17.
On a night when IU Southeast shot just 7-of-29 from three-point range they dominated in the paint, outscoring SMWC 44-12.
Morgan Roberts had a season-high three blocks and
Grace Stapleton had a season-high four steals to lead the Grenadiers in both categories.
IU Southeast hosts Rio Grande Saturday at 1 p.m.
