NEW ALBANY, Ind . – A last second shot by
Linzie Wernert forced overtime and
Jericho Hopper scored two huge baskets to help IU Southeast defeat Midway 73-70 in overtime in the River States Conference Women's Basketball Championship Quarterfinals.
Jesse Ledgerwood led IU Southeast with 21 points and
Grace Stapleton and
Linzie Wernert each had 16 points and 12 rebounds.
"I am so proud of our fight tonight," head coach Abby Downard said. "It was a great team win all around. Everyone chipped in to make key plays down-the-stretch. Back to work tomorrow."
The first half was sluggish offensively but a 7-0 run by
Grace Stapleton to end the first quarter and start the second gave the Grenadiers a 17-10 lead.
After Midway cut the lead to two,
Jesse Ledgerwood connected on a three-pointer but the Eagles closed the half on an 11-2 run to take a 32-28 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, a consecutive jumpers by Jacie Chesser extended the Midway lead to 44-35 with four minutes left in the period.
Ella Brown hit a big three-pointer to cut the deficit to 48-44 then
Morgan Roberts cut the lead to 50-49 with a three-pointer and layup to end the quarter.
Jesse Ledgerwood put the Grenadiers back in front with a three-pointer two minutes into the fourth. Then
Linzie Wernert scored to extend the lead to 57-54 with 5:50 to play.
Midway held IU Southeast to just two points down-the-stretch and took a 61-60 lead on a free throw by Jermya Christian.
After a steal by Chesser caused the Grenadiers to foul to try to get the ball back, Morgan Cross hit one of two shots to make it a 62-60 game.
After an IU Southeast timeout, Wernert drove the baseline and scored to tie the game and force overtime.
Midway led 67-64 to start overtime but Hopper and Wernert scored to tie the game at 68.
Hopper scored on a layup and then got the defensive rebound at other end before finishing with another layup off a pass from Stapleton. IU Southeast led 72-68.
Alexis Taylor hit two free-throws to cut the lead to two but Wernert was fouled and hit one of two free-throws and a three by Morgan Cross missed to give the Grenadiers the win.
IU Southeast will travel to No. 1 seed Rio Grande Saturday at 2 p.m.
