Grenadiers win series after sweeping doubleheader vs. SSU

NEW ALBANY, Ind. - IU Southeast baseball picked up its fourth conference series win of the season after sweeping a doubleheader over Shawnee State Saturday afternoon.

Coach Vincent Tornincasa's squad improved to 19-9 overall and 10-2 in conference play following Saturday's victories over SSU. Next up for the Grenadiers is a trip to Campbellsville, Ky., for a 3:00 p.m. game against the Campbellsville Tigers.

Game 1: IU Southeast 13, Shawnee State 5

Just like in game one of this series, the game shifted drastically in the fifth inning. Trailing 2-1, IU Southeast's offense went to work. With two outs and the bases loaded, Kevin Moore singled to center to put IU Southeast ahead. Moore would score two batters later after a single by Bryson Arnette.

IU Southeast added two more runs after an SSU fielding error, then continued to pour on the runs. Joel Johnson recorded an RBI single, then scored after a single to left by Matt Santana. The Grenadiers scored eleven runs on six hits and took advantage of three SSU fielding errors in the fifth inning.

On the mound, Brendan Whalen improved to 4-0 after 5.0 innings of work. Whalen allowed two runs on five hits and three strikeouts.

Game 2: IU Southeast 5, Shawnee State 1

After a slow start offensively, IU Southeast struck first in the fourth inning. Gabe Yonto and Moore hit back-to-back singles to open the inning. Two batters later, Arnette doubled down the left field line to score Yonto for the first run of the game.

The Grendaiers added onto their lead in the fifth. IU Southeast took advantage of a wild pitch to go up 2-0, then went ahead 3-0 after a sacrifice fly by Kasen Parks. Yonto would make it 4-0 after tripling to the wall in right field. Yonto would tap the dish during the next at-bat when Kevin Moore singled to center.

Shawnee State would score one in the top of the seventh, but Jack Skidmore slammed the door on their comeback bid to secure the game and the series victory for IU Southeast.
