NEW ALBANY, Ind. - IU Southeast softball swept a doubleheader over IU Columbus Tuesday afternoon.
The Grenadiers improved to 12-7 (6-6 RSC) following Tuesday's wins over the Crimson Pride. Next up for IU Southeast is a trip to Oakland City, Ind., on Friday for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader against the Oakland City Mighty Oaks.
Game 1: IU Southeast 6, IU Columbus 4
A two-out single by Grace Stapleton changed the whole game. Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the third with runners on second and third, Stapleton tied the game with a two-run double.
One inning later, the Grenadiers took the lead for good. Lillian Mackey led off the inning with an infield single, then advanced to second after an errant throw, then made it to third after a wild pitch.
Alaina Winzeler hit an infield single, then advanced to second after Ava Allen flew out to right. With two on and one out, Josie Lemmons put IU Southeast ahead with a single to left, scoring Mackey and Winzeler. Lemmons would score shortly after making it 6-3.
The Crimson Pride made it interesting in the top of the seventh, getting one run back while recording a pair of hits. Emma Davis checked into the game and earned a save after slamming the door shut on IU Columbus's comeback bid.
Game 2: IU Southeast 10, IU Columbus 2 (6 innings)
Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth, the IU Southeast offense came alive. With the bases loaded and one out, Winzeler drew a walk to break the tie. Lizzy Leitgabel checked into the game as a pinch hitter and drew a walk to make it 4-2.
Lemmons singled to center to double the Grenadiers' lead to 6-2, then Sofia Guy singled to center to make it 8-2.
The game ended after Chloee Shewmaker sent a fastball to the gap in right center to make it 10-2 to finish off the run-ruling.
Emma Davis, fresh off RSC Pitcher of the Week honors, pitched 6.0 innings, allowing two runs on nine hits and striking out five. Davis, along with the rest of IU Southeast's defense, stranded nine IU Columbus baserunners.
