OWENSBORO, Ky. - IU Southeast softball split a road doubleheader against the Brescia Bearcats Friday afternoon.
The Grenadiers, now 18-15 overall and 12-12 in conference, will hit the field Saturday at the Koetter Sports Softball Complex for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader against the KCU Knights.
Game 1: IU Southeast 15, Brescia 3 (6 innings)
The Grenadiers got off to a fast start in game one. Sofia Guy hit an RBI single, Kaitlyn Leister hit a two-run double, and Lillian Mackey hit an RBI single to make it 4-0 in the first inning. One inning later, Grace Stapleton hit an RBI single, then IU Southeast scored another run shortly after.
Brescia plated three runs in the second inning to cut the Grenadiers' lead in half. Three innings later, IU Southeast scored two more after the Bearcats committed an error. IU Southeast put the game away in the sixth, scoring six runs. Leister, Alaina Winzeler, Josie Lemmons, and McKenzie Walters all batted in at least one RBI each in the sixth.
Liv Morris pitched 6.0 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits, two strikeouts, and picked up the win.
Game 2: Brescia 5, IU Southeast 1
Just like in game one, the Grenadiers struck first. Lemmons tapped the dish after a passed ball to put IU Southeast up 1-0. The Grenadiers' lead was short lived, however. Brescia plated two runs in the next frame.
The Bearcats added another run in the bottom of the third, then put the game away in the bottom of the sixth and Brescia took game two 5-1. IU Southeast finished the game with one run on five hits and left six runners on base.
