NEW ALBANY, Ind. - IU Southeast softball split a home doubleheader against the KCU Knights at the Koetter Sports Softball Complex Saturday afternoon.
The Grenadiers are 19-16 overall and 13-13 in conference play following Saturday's split with the Knights. Next up for the Grenadiers is a 2:00 p.m. road doubleheader against Saint Mary of the Woods on Tuesday.
Game 1: IU Southeast 8, KCU 0 (5 innings)
McKenzie Walters opened the scoring with a two-run double in the third, then Sofia Guy extended IU Southeast's lead to 3-0 after an RBI single to right.
One inning later, Alaina Winzeler extended the Grenadiers' lead to 4-0 with a single to center. Winzeler would later score after Josie Lemmons hit an RBI single. Lemmons finished the game with a game-high three hits.
Leading 5-0 with the bases loaded and a chance to run-rule the Knights, Kaitlyn Leister belted a fastball to the gap in left center. Leister's three-run triple ended the game, and the Grenadiers won 8-0.
Liv Morris earned another win in game one, pitching 5.0 shutout innings, allowing just one hit and two strikeouts.
Game 2: KCU 4, IU Southeast 2
Just like in game one, IU Southeast struck first in the bottom of the third. Chloee Shewmaker tapped the dish after a sacrifice fly by Walters.
The game began to tighten up in the fifth when KCU tied it after a fielding error. One frame after, Raycee Stallings put the Grenadiers back up after an RBI single.
IU Southeast's lead would prove to be short lived. KCU hit a two-run single with the bases loaded to take the lead. The Knights tacked on another in the seventh and won 4-2.
The Grenadiers struggled again in run support in game two. IU Southeast finished the game with two runs on ten hits and left eight baserunners stranded.
