SAINT MARY OF THE WOODS, Ind. - IU Southeast softball split a road doubleheader against the Saint Mary of the Woods Pomeroys Tuesday afternoon.
The Grenadiers are 20-17 (14-14 RSC) following Tuesday's split with the Pomeroys. Next up for IU Southeast is a trip to Beckley, W.Va., for a doubleheader against WVU-Tech.
Game 1: IU Southeast 19, Saint Mary of the Woods 1 (6 innings)
Sofia Guy opened the scoring with a three-run homer in the top of the first. The Grenadiers blew the game wide open in the second with nine runs. McKenzie Walters, Savannah Gaither, Grace Stapleton, Kaitlyn Leister, Millian Mackey, Josie Lemmons, and Guy all recorded at least one RBI in the second inning.
IU Southeast scored two runs in the third and two more in the fourth. Maddy Olander and Emily Wolf also recorded RBIs in the fifth inning. Fourteen different Grenadiers recorded a hit, eleven recorded an RBI, and the Grenadiers' 19 runs were the most they have scored in a game this season.
Game 2: Saint Mary of the Woods 4, IU Southeast 2
Saint Mary of the Woods scored one in the first and two more in the fourth. IU Southeast did not score until the sixth inning. Lemmons led off the sixth with a single, then got into scoring position after stealing second. Lemmons crossed home plate two at-bats later after an RBI single by Guy. Leister cut the Pomeroys' lead to 3-2 after an RBI single.
The Pomeroys got a run back in the bottom of the sixth after a solo home run. Lemmons drew a two-out walk in the seventh but did not score, and Saint Mary of the Woods took game two 4-2.
