MIDWAY, Ky. - IU Southeast finished off a series sweep over the Midway Eagles after winning 9-8 in ten innings.
Trailing 3-2 in the top of the seventh, IU Southeast's offense went to work. Coulter Hamilton put the Grenadiers back on top with a two-RBI single, then Trevor Goodwin added two more runs after a triple down the left field line.
One frame later, the Eagles took advantage of an IU Southeast fielding error and scored two runs. Midway's runs in the bottom of the seventh were nullified in the top of the eighth after Chance Bentley batted in two runs with a single to left.
The Eagles scored one run in the bottom of the eighth to cut the lead to 8-6. In the bottom of the ninth, Midway tied the game with a two-run home run. With the score knotted at 8-8, IU Southeast and Midway went to extra innings.
Gabe Yonto reached base via error, advanced to second after a wild pitch, then stole third. With Yonto on third with two outs, Kasen Parks tripled to left field to put the Grenadiers back on top. The Eagles made a push in the bottom of the tenth but Alston Whitworth struck out the final two batters to seal the win and finish the series sweep.
The Grenadiers are 32-13 overall and 19-5 in conference play following the win over Midway. IU Southeast holds a narrow, one game lead over Oakland City in the River States Conference standings with one weekend series left to play.
Before traveling to IU Kokomo next weekend for their final conference series of the year, the Grenadiers will take on the Georgetown Tigers in their final home game of the season. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. at the Koetter Sports Baseball Complex.
