PORTSMOUTH, Ohio - IU Southeast softball swept a road doubleheader against the Shawnee State Bears Friday afternoon.
The Grenadiers improved to 14-13 overall and 8-10 in conference play after Friday's victories over SSU. Coach Courtney Holm's team will come home on Monday for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader against Saint Mary of the Woods College.
Game 1: IU Southeast 5, Shawnee State 2 (8 innings)
The Bears opened the scoring in the second after an IU Southeast error, plating two runs. The Grenadiers leveled the score in the top of the fifth after a two-run double by Chloee Shewmaker.
Sofia Guy came up huge for the Grenadiers in the eighth inning. With a runner on first and one out, Guy homered to make it 4-2. Two at-bats later, Grace Stapleton made it 5-2 with an RBI single.
Shawnee State's first two hitters reached base in the bottom of the eighth, but the Grenadiers' defense held strong to deliver a 5-2 win in game one.
Liv Morris got the start in the circle for the Grenadiers and had a fantastic outing. Morris pitched all 8.0 innings, allowing two runs (zero earned) on seven hits and a strikeout.
Game 2: IU Southeast 10, Shawnee State 3
The Grenadier's offense picked up where they left in game score, scoring at least one run in each of the first four innings. Savannah Gaither recorded an RBI double in the first to open the score, Shewmaker hit a three-run homer in the second, then the Grenadiers scored their next two runs via free bases.
Shawnee State got two runs back in the sixth, but the Grenadiers slammed the door on SSU's comeback bid. IU Southeast scored four in the top of the seventh. Lillian Mackey recorded an RBI single, Stapleton scored via a groundout by Alaina Winzeler, and Shewmaker hit a two-run double.
Emma Davis pitched a complete game, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and striking out three Bears.
