Grenadiers sweep SMWC; extend win streak to four

NEW ALBANY, Ind. - IU Southeast softball has four conseuctive wins after sweeping a home doubleheader over Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Monday afternoon at the Koetter Sports Softball Complex.  

The Grenadiers are 16-13 overall and 10-10 in conference play following Monday's victories over the Pomeroys. Coach Courtney Holm's squad will travel to Columbus, Ind., for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader against the IU Columbus Crimson Pride.  

Game 1: IU Southeast 10, SMWC 2 (5 innings) 

IU Southeast got the offense going early in game one when McKenzie Walters hit an RBI double, then Lillian Mackey tacked on two more after reaching via an error. Mackey scored the Grenadiers' next run two innings later.  

The Grenadiers blew the game wide open in the fourth, plating five runs to go up 9-0. Josie Lemmons tapped the dish after a sacrifice fly by Grace Stapleton, then Kaitlyn Leister added two more after a single to left with the bases loaded. Chloee Shewmaker made it 9-0 with another two-RBI single. 

The Pomeroys got a pair of runs back in the top of the fifth, but the Grenadiers called game after Raycee Stallings hit a two-out RBI single to finish off the run-ruling. Emma Davis picked up her eighth win after pitching 5.0 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and striking out six.  

Game 2: IU Southeast 3, SMWC 1 

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth, the top of the Grenadiers' offense went to work. Lemmons reached base via an error to lead it off, stole second, then scored after an infield single by Mackey.  

Right after Mackey tied the game, Leister put the Grenadiers ahead. With the bases loaded and no outs, Leister singled to left to put IU Southeast up 3-1. Halley Foley and the Grenadiers' defense sat the Pomeroys down in order in the top of the seventh to secure the victory. Foley pitched 4.0 innings of scoreless relief and was the winning pitcher.
