Softball splits doubleheader with IU Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ind. - IU Southeast softball split a road doubleheader against the IU Columbus Crimson Pride Tuesday afternoon.

Tuesday's results gave the Grenadiers their fifth win in their last six games. IU Southeast is now 17-14 overall and 11-11 in conference play. The Grenadiers look to keep their momentum going for their next outing, which is a 3:00 p.m. road doubleheader against the Brescia Bearcats.

Game 1: IU Columbus 8, IU Southeast 2

IU Southeast tied the game at 1-1 in the third after taking advantage of an IUC fielding error but were unable to take the lead. The Crimson Pride retook the lead in the bottom of the third after scoring two, then scoring two more in the fourth.

Trailing 5-2 in the sixth, IU Southeast had a hit and two free bases to load the bases but left all three baserunners stranded. The Grenadiers struggled in run support, stranding 11 baserunners in game one. IU Columbus took game one 8-2.

Game 2: IU Southeast 18, IU Columbus 8

After struggling in run support in game one, the Grenadiers flipped the script in game two. IU Southeast scored at least one run in every inning of game two. In the top of the first, IU Southeast used four hits and a IUC error to go up 4-0.

The Grenadiers batted around one inning later. McKenzie Walters, Grace Stapleton, Alaina Winzeler, and Chloee Shewmaker all batted in at least one RBI each in the second inning. After two innings, the Grenadiers led 11-0.

IU Columbus would not go down easily, however. The Grenadiers led 14-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth, but the Crimson Pride scored five to cut the lead to 14-8. IU Southeast responded to IUC's rally with a solo home run from Kaitlyn Leister in the fifth, and a three-run double by Savannah Gaither in the sixth to finish off the run-ruling.
