FRANKFORT, Ky. - The IU Southeast women's basketball team rolled to an 11-point victory over Asbury College on Friday afternoon at the Frankfort Convention Center in Frankfort, Ky. The Grenadiers defeated the Eagles 52-41 in the first semifinal of the women's tournament. With the win, IU Southeast advances to the KIAC Championship game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The IU Southeast women's basketball team improves its overall season record to 22-8. The Grenadiers also earned the first seed in this year's tournament with a 12-1 regular-season record against KIAC opponents. The IU Southeast women will play the winner of Berea College vs. Brescia University during Saturday's championship game.
IU Southeast was led by freshman
Ashmere Woods (Louisville, Ky.) with 18 points and nine rebounds.
Alden Krausse (Floyds Knobs, Ind.) added eight points, six rebounds and four blocks for IU Southeast.
The Grenadiers shot 34-percent from field goal range and only 16-percent from behind the 3-pt. arc. IU Southeast led over the visiting Eagles of Asbury by five points at halftime, 18-13.
IU Southeast outscored Grenadiers 34-28 in the second half.
IU Southeast combined for a total of five steals with seven blocks defensively. Asbury committed 24 turnovers, while IU Southeast only turned the ball over 15 times. The Grenadiers were 20-of-35 from the free throw line for 57-percent. The Grenadiers out-rebounded the Eagles 35-33. IU Southeast also had an impressive 12 offensive rebounds.
Tickets at Frankfort Convention Center are $10 for an adult, $8 for a senior adult, and $5 for students per day. Tomorrow's winner will earn an automatic bid to 19th Annual State Farm-NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship in Sioux City, Iowa from March 10-16 in the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena.
