Grenadiers Stun Lubbock Christian 7-5 To Open NAIA Tournament

GULF SHORES, Ala. - The IU Southeast softball team defeated fifth-ranked Lubbock Christian 7-5 on Thursday night to give the program arguably its biggest win in program history.

The Grenadiers' Kayla Duke overcame five first-inning runs to pick up the complete-game victory. She limited Lubbock Christian to three hits and three walks, while fanning six. Jade Detzer led the way offensively, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Katie Jelinek, Nicole Mills and Summer Sanders each added a pair of hits.


After Lubbock Christian went ahead 5-0 with five runs on one hit and two errors, the Grenadiers scored a pair in the second on Detzer's two-run single. IU Southeast scored three more runs in the third to tie it up. Sanders started the scoring in the third with a single, and then a clutch hit by tied the game as Jelinek swatted a two-out, two-run single to left-center.

The winning run came in the sixth when Duke tripled to score Carah McGeorge. Duke scored on Detzer's base hit.

The Grenadiers (33-17) knocked around Lubbock Christian's pitching staff, scoring seven runs, three earned, on 10 hits. Starter Meagan Navarrette last just two and a third innings and surrendered five runs on six hits.

The Grenadiers' are back in action Friday night when they face Union (Tenn.) at 7 p.m. ET.
