Grenadiers' Late Rally Falls Short Against St. Catharine

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast baseball team gave up seven unanswered runs in the first four innings, but staged a furious comeback before falling 8-6 to St. Catharine on Tuesday night.

In the first inning, starter Brandon Ward gave up two jam-shot hits that fell right in front of Grenadier outfielders just out of their reach, one of which was a two-run single to get the Patriots on the board first.

St. Catharine (16-7) added a run in the third on a sacrifice fly by Josh Wenning.

The major damage was done in the fourth inning as the Patriots struck for four runs in the inning.

The Grenadiers (13-9) answered with three runs in the fifth. Josh Beams and Trent Simpson hit back-to-back RBI singles to score Grant Anderson and Alex Dapkus. Then Logan Coughlin hit a sacrifice fly to score Marcus Howard.

IU Southeast would add three more runs in the bottom of the ninth all with two outs. The big blow came from Beams who hit a two-run double to left. Simpson brought in Beams with a single. The Grenadiers had two runners on but could not get the runners in to tie the game.

Beams went 2-for-5 with three RBI in the win. Simpson went 3-for-4 with one RBI.

Jarrod Messex (0-1) took the loss, working four innings and giving up a run.
